Matt, mornings, and being a clown: Your questions answered

Every Friday, Meredith answers your questions -- feel free to post a question of your own for next week!

You and Matt seem to get along really well. Are you still great friends once you're off the air? What's the best part about working with Matt?
Posted by Nikki on October 16

When it comes to Matt Lauer, what's not to get along with? He's smart, funny, and incredibly generous both on and off the air. From Day 1 he made me feel like part of the family. Plus, we have the same birthday (even though I'm older). He also loves to play practical jokes, so he keeps me on my toes.

Do you ever plan on doing anything else in your career?

I don't tend to look ahead, but I know I like working on projects that involve kids. I can easily see myself on the other side of the camera and loving it. I've also wanted to be a therapeutic clown who works in the pediatric ward. I think that would be incredibly rewarding.

Just curious as to how you've been adjusting to your new early morning hours? I cannot imagine waking up at that hour every weekday morning!

I'm actually liking the new schedule (maybe I've just drunk the Kool-Aid...) I am a late-night person but I decided to immerse myself in the early morning madness instead of fighting it. And do you know what I've found? It's neat to be the only one up in my house at 3AM...no kids fighting, no dog barking, no cats chasing squirrels in the bathroom. Just me with a cup of coffee, easing into my morning.

Hi Meredith,
You are such a neat, fun, bright and wonderful person. I definitely watch "Millionaire" every day, as well as "Today" whenever I can.
I have been trying to contact you for a while, and if there was only one question I would like to ask of you, it would be this:

How did you get involved with AutismSpeaks.org?

I am 41 and was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (high-functioning form of autism) at age 34!
Your fascination with kids is really cool because I'm getting ready to start working with special kids myself!
I will start working on my Master's in Occupational Therapy next year, and will be working with kids, adolescents and adults with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
If at all possible, could you please e-mail me (my name is Joe) at moowraith@msn.com. I'd love to know more about your charity work in autism and how you got started in it.
I hope to hear from you someday.
Thanks again, Meredith, for being the special person you are to us fans!

Joe :)

Hey Meredith! I just started reading your blog this week and I have enjoyed it. I also want to say that you are doing a GREAT job on the Today Show. I was very sorry to see Katie go, but I could tell on your very first day, after you put icing on Matt's nose (Ha)that you were going to be a good fit. You & Matt work together really well. My Aunt & I were able to come to New York in September(we live in Texas) and we went to the Today Show. It was great seeing everyone in person. Thanks for being you---

Do you still keep in contact with the boy from Chicago that you featured in a story on West 57th program - I think his name may have been Anthony?

You are just such a real person and I enjoyed you on the View and was upset that you left. I didn't realize that I would enjoy you just as much on The Today Show. You seem very down to earth and I guess that's why I am a fan. Keep up the great work!!!

Hey! I am a college senior/admirer of yours since the beginning of The View. (Sure didn't know many other 12 year olds at the time who relished in a sick day home from school to tune in at 10am!!)
Reading about your journalism career start was inspiring --your persistence despite setbacks. I can do persistence, but what I can;t do is downright callousness. Any advice for a young woman on the verge of the "Real World" in terms of dealing with the obscene competition that permeates the work force? I used to have huge dreams of being a TV journalist. 2 years ago I had my first TV internship and though I still have the interest, I am now extremely wary. I have such a desire to connect with people and tell their stories; but the competition I encountered was disheartening. How can a purist find her place in the midst of so much chaos? Why can't more people have your sincerity and warmth? Would you like an intern with a big heart and strong work ethic? I know you probably get this a lot, but I am different. Let me know!

Meridth,
I know you used to be a heavy smoker and quit. How'd you do it? Any advice for us smokers out there who respect your advice?

Meredith,
Would you be willing to share more information about your experience with pregnancy loss. I know you went on to have 3 children after 5 losses and many of us are wondering if you found something, tried something new or was it just nature that finally worked for you. Thank you in advance for any further information that you can provide.

I've gotten dressed in the morning with the Today show for as long as I can remember and, frankly, was upset when my "original four" was no more! But, Meredith, I must tell you that you are delightful. Not being a fan of The View, I was prepared to begin to look for another AM show.. boy am I glad I didn't. You fit in perfectly. My lesson from this is "don't make snap judgements or rash decisions". Welcome aboard.

Is it true that the Today show is going to soon be on FOUR hours a day?

What will they add?

Hi Meredith,

I am a fan from The View and tape The Today show everyday so you can brighten my day. Why don't they let you say goodbye when you leave the show at nine o'clock. Keep up the good work.

Hi Meredith,
I just discovered that you have a blog. Good for you! I look forward to reading it. One more thing added to your busy life.
My question is this: Have you ever been to Nova Scotia and where in the world have you not visited that you would like to?
Cheers for now, S.

Meredith you crack me up. You have such a great crazy side to you. I love the fact that you aren't afraid to take things another step. I just love watching the interactions that go on. It is so entertaining and helps kick start my day.

Hi Meredith. I just discovered your blog. I have birds and love every one of them. I was happy to read about your animals. I have lost my share of them also and losing each one is very hard. I also love you on the Today Show and Who Wants to be a Millionair. Are you going to continue doing both? The Today Show looks like a dream job. I am a waitress which can be very hard at times. I'm sure your job is too at times. Keep up the good work.

You are simply 'the classiest' person on morning TV. Your blogs only confirm what a genuine, beautiful person you are.

I saw your segment today on the IMRI and Austin Roberts. She is
adorable, and I was so glad to see her helping others who can benefit
from the IMRI machine.

I belong to a shared list of people with brain cancer and their loved
ones, which has over 1,000 members. One of the members send the link
for your video so we could all see it. My friend and love of my life,
Craig Cornelius, has a form of brain cancer called gliosarcoma. People
with this type of cancer usually do not survive more than a year after
diagnosis.

There's something important that you need to know about brain cancer and
brain tumors. They are incurable. No matter what type of brain tumor
the patient has, there is no cure, so even those who have their tumors
completely removed are at high risk of having the cancer come back
months or years later. While I hope that does not happen to anyone,
including Austin, your segment left the impression that it is possible
to cure brain cancer as long as you have surgery with an

Will you ever have "Katie" as a guest

I really was touched by your segment on Richard's book on chronic illness. I am a board member of PANDORA, a nonprofit group for advocacy, empowerment, and research on neuroendocrineimmune disorders, the "invisible" chronic illneses: fibromyalgia, which I have, chronic fatigue syndrome, finally recognized by the CDC in Nov., and other illnesses. Living with an invisible chronic illness is extremely difficult. Millions of people are affected, who in the past wnet to multiple doctors, most of whom suggested a psychiatrist. I just returned from an empowering international conference for patients, physicians, and researchers with over 700 people from all over the world attending. Marly Silverman, founder and president of PANDORA and Dr. Nancy Klimas, president of the national organization and leading researcher on CFS in the world were instrumental in putting this conference together. If Richard is interested in learning about these invisible, but disabling disorders, we would love to write him. Thank you both!

I just wanted to tell Meridth; that i was a student of her's when i was in junior high and i really loved her very much and i would like to stay in touch as a old friends....
