Ice, ice maybe
It was the thud heard round the world…okay, maybe just the skating rink at Rockefeller Center. There I was interviewing Will Ferrell about his new movie Blades of Glory where he plays an Olympic skating star and sex addict.
Will graciously agreed to do the interview on skates. (Note to self—never suggest that again.) So we’re coming to the end of the segment and I get the bright idea, “Wouldn’t it be funny if I tried to skate underneath Will’s legs.”
He seemed game, so I got behind him, squatted down, and tried to skate my way through his improvised tunnel. I got stuck halfway, and maybe I should have stayed there, because in my effort to make it through the "tunnel," my skates slipped out from underneath me, and bang went my head on the ice.
Will felt terrible, even though it wasn’t his fault. (Of course my lawyer says I should keep my mouth shut and let him do the talking.) I felt like an idiot, especially since I just fell on my head in January. I think I’m okay, as I sit here blogging with an ice pack and two Advil.
Tomorrow I’m supposed to go back on the ice to interview Will’s co-star Jon Heder—and we’re supposed to skate together.
I’ve always thought I needed to “have my head examined.” Now I know I do.

Not that it will make your head feel any better but it was absolutely hilarious...they should have put you in the movie.
Oh Meredith! OUCH! I think I did hear the thud! You poor thing! You ALMOST made it! Kudos for trying! You're one tough cookie!
Feel better!
Hey Meredith, I saw your wonderful interview with the 2 photojournalists tracking wild animals in Afghanistan among other places. Your quip, hey maybe you guys should find Bin Laden, was priceless - your quick wit shines through and I think you are doing a great job on The Today Show.
Perhaps you should consider a helmet. Not just for the ice - but for life in general. :-)
Love you, always have. I counted down the moment until you got hurt this morning. I think everyone but you knew this was going to happen. I hope you are okay, keep up the good work.
Meredith
Not again! Somebody else needs to do the ice skating segments. You're cute but you're not Dorothy Hammil (aging myself) on ice.
Hope you feel better!
I love to see the human side of people in the news!
Ouch! Poor Meredith, I hope your head feels better soon. You were really a trooper not to just lay back down on the ice and bawl; I know I would have! that HURTS!
I felt your pain Meredith. Was that really an audition for the sequel? You and Will had some onscreen chemistry going on.
Hi Meredith,
When I was about ten we had a rink in the back yard. I had invited this cute boy over to skate, I had the biggest crush on him! Anyway, it was a perfect Saturday afternoon and I was looking forward to having him come in for hot chocolate. But then I fell, just like you did. He just stood there, kinda like Will. I saw the same stars you did. My Mom mad me wear my little brothers hockey helmut for the rest of the afternoon. So embarrassing. I felt that crack again today(38yrs later)...did they have to replay it so many times!!
I hope you're ok.
Love and Best Wishes
Leanne
OUCH...why is it that head "bumps" hurt the worst!
A segment on "how to do stunts" with a stunt "person" may be in order???
Can't wait to see the clip as part of the montage at the end of the year!
Meredith-
I saw the whole thing this morning. While I felt horrible for you as it looked like it hurt a lot, It was absolutely hilarious, especially since it was with fuzzy-headed funny man Will Ferrell. I commend you on your recovery, the show must go on!
I hope your headache is gone!
Marlena
Wow - what a crack on the head! My husband called me from Europe right after it happened and you were the first thing I mentioned to him! Looked incredibly painful; you are truly a trooper to be able to smile through it. Hope you're feeling better. Take care and watch that noggin.
Hi Meredith,
I hope you are feeling better - Advil and Ice - the best things for that. I hate to say this, but I have a feeling this will be on the "blooper reel" and you will probably catch grief about this from Matt and Al, but then, would they do this? Take care and all the best. You are one super lady - you and the gang really start my day!
Laura
Wow, tough fall! Hope you're OK and I was impressed how you hung in there to finish. We'll be in NYC this summer, hope to see you then!
Hi Meredith,
I hope you are feeling better. I was really worried when I saw you fall this morning. Feel better and be careful tomorrow.
Warmest Regards,
Nilda
Hi Meredith,
It hurt just watching you fall, especially when it was played back in slow motion. You and ice don't seem to get along. Hope you are ok and please stick to solid ground.
Bob
You are too funny!
THAT'S gonna leave a mark.
I was one of the ice skaters (and I am a Fieldston alumni) and was about 10 feet from you when you went down. Ouch. As a skater I know how much that hurt. Hope tomorrow goes better with Scott!!!!! I will be skating.
Meridth- not only was it a thud heard aroung the world, but I felt the pain with you. I am so hooked on Today because of you that I can't wait to get up in the morning!!!! a first for me. With all the falls that you have had, just maybe you should have your head examed by a doctor-your getting older and you never know whats going to happen and with what you have left in that little brain you should keep. Love ya Keep up the good work
I have been thinking about you the whole day! I saw that and just winced in pain. I really do hope your head feels better and good luck on your Jon Heder interview tomorrow!
Hay Meredith, I am so glad that you acceped the job on the TODAY show, You make my mornings and you really are a "true" person..and I really wish more journalist would learn, your talent..Great Job!!! Your the Best,Baby!! Debbie
Ouch Meredith!
I hope you feel better. You're pretty brave. :)
Now what did I say about you needing to wear a football helmet????
PLEASE wear one!! :) hee hee
Joe :)
Hi Meredith'Im so sorry you hit your head. One winter morning in NH, I had just driven in to the parking lot at work with the best cup of coffie on the planet, Igot out of my car and headed down the long parking lot to punch in to my time clock, hit a patch of ice, and down i went, hit my head, and spilled good coffie all over me!ALL I cared about was the coffie !take care pam!
Ouch! It sounded like someone breaking open a coconut.
Hi Meredith! I fell 2 wks. ago trying to skateboard (Im a 35 yr old stay at home mom!) Who wants to be boring??!!
Hope you feel better!! :)
Rebecca
Just keep on being you.that's what makes you so endearing to your fans.I hope you are feeling better now. do you have a lump on your head you can share with us tomorrow? Next time you choose to skate, how about wearing a helmet tho. You are indeed a breath of fresh air. One never knows what next to expect, that's why I keep watching, and enjoying, but hated to see your fall today. Gloria, Washington state
Meredith-
You are just hilarious! That is what I love about you, you are a real person just like the rest of the people that watch the show. Take two advil, get some rest tonight and hit it again tomorrow..... and I don't mean hit your head again, but go out there and take no prisioners.
What were you thinking?!
OUCH! Yes, I did hear that thud! I'm hurting for you too! Love the title--Ice, Ice Maybe!
Meridith
I can not quit thinking about your poor head and what happened, are you really ok? I was so scared you had a horrible head injury it looked bad. I am so sorry this happened to you and I hope you are doing better. You are awesome but please girl be careful!!!!
Meredith, it's fine, we love to see people look human! You should be pround, you made the Perez Hilton blog today! Congrats!
Oh Meredith--that was hard to watch. You are one amazing woman--always up for an adventure. I hope you are feeling better in the morning!
Love from a real fan,
K
I'm glad you're ok now. You're such a trooper, but be careful, Meredith, I think this is the third time you hit your head on the job.
You might consider your tush for a softer landing! Keep your head about you (or not!) ;)
Dana
It was one of those moments... like when you know your kids are going down but you just can't move fast enough to stop it. (Or when you know the squeals of laughter are about to turn to screams of pain.)
Question - why do you not do the final hour?
Blessings,
Rhonda
Meredith, what is it about your head?! Maybe you should have that head scan. Don't you realize that even the tiniest bump on the head kills brain cells? I think you should consider a stunt person. Take care, we enjoy you too much!
ouch, i missed the show. It's great that your able to show that you are just like everyone else. Hey and you may have taught someone else a lesson about trying to do tricks on the ice. Thats taking one for the team. way to go!
OUCH! I felt that! Go to a Doctor, please, I hope you are OK.
Meredith,
From a certified clutz myself, I feel for you. I love the fact that you are so real. From a working mom with a sick husband myself, I admire your strength during hard times, your carefree attitude and your honesty. Keep up the good work and nurse your bump!!!
I was shocked that Meredith chose not to wear a helmet during this stunt.
Also, that advisors to this segment, did not require necessary safety precautions be taken. Would a helmet mess up her hair or make her look dorky? Pleas Meredith could've been seriously hurt with a permanent brain injury. With all of the coverage on TBI from Bob Woodruff's experience, it seems we should get the message about protecting our most valuable organ, the brain. I believe that The Today Show should stick with reporting interesting, newsworthy topics, such as "How to Raise a CEO". Meredith did an enlightening interview with the four sisters (Tues. Mar. 27). This piece was informative, and set standards for women and parents to instill in their families. I bet none of these highly eduacated and intelligent women would do a stunt on ice without a helmet.
Frankly, I am tired of the silly stuff on the TTS. I think the talented staff should stick to stories with an impact on our lives; Please stop the risky, showboat experiences.
I'm glad you're okay, Meredith. I saw that segment live yesterday morning and cringed when your head hit the ice.
Hope you're feeling better...I know that was a hard hit.
You're great, BTW. Best host that show has ever had!
Hey Meredith
I've banged my head on ice, too, and I didnt get up as fast, thinking I had cracked my head open! Just to get up so quickly should earn you a Daytime Emmy nomination! If headaches persist, make sure to call your chiropractor!
I loved your remark on finding Bin Laden in Afghanistan. And that fall,... OUCH! Been there, done that! But, as much as it probably hurt, it is nice to see the human side of people on TV! Hope you feel better!
Have'nt heard how your doing since the fall. Hope your doing good. Please let me (us) know. Miss you on the show.
Hello Meridith,
I watched you yesterday when you fell my heart stoped. You were a real trooper. I saw you squat down to go between Wills legs and I was thinking that does not look safe I hope she makes it through. I really thought you had it for a second and then down you went....ouch!!!!! I can't believe how many tines they replayed it today. This is going down in the history of Meridiths goofs and I expect to see it many times in the future because that's what they do on the Today show. I've been watching the show for years from beginning to end everyday it's a part of my life and I was really upset when Katie left but I hardly notice now your terific and doing a great job.
Good luck in the future and I hope your head is alright.
Robin
OUCH!!!!!!
We saw you in person for the first time and were pleasantly surprised at how personable and friendly you were with the crowd!!Thanks, you made my daughter's b-day and trip to NYC very special!!
Where did you get those beautiful earings (big oval hoops) that you wore on Friday 3/23/07???
Meredith: That was a huge hit. I'm glad to hear you actually didn't crack your skull! Until I head your entry this morning, i wasn't sure. Hang in there baby. You're a breath of fresh air every morning. One hell of a journalist, anchor, etc, and very easy on the eyes..lol. Best Wishes, Cliff in CA
Well now, that sucks. Girl- keep your heels on and stay off the ice- no more skates;)
Meredith, as I watched I actually had tears in my eyes. I did that as a teen (hmmm...1980?) on ROLLER skates...I just wanted to walk away, hide and cry.. ;) You are the best!
Meridith - so we know you don't cook, now we know you don't skate!!! But, what makes you so fun on the show is you just jump in anyway, like the rest of us, even if the outcome is less than what you planned...
P.S. my fractured skull from whacking the back of my head healed itself nicely :-)
Bev
My 7 yr. old grandson and I watch the Today Show every morning while getting ready for school and work. He heard you say you were an "idiot" this morning because you were going back on the ice. He quickly said, "She's not an idiot, she's beautiful!" Thought you would want to know.
Hi Meredith, Are You okay? I haven't been seeing you on the Today Show. I Hope you feel better!
WOW.... I know that had to hurt... you sure didnt act real hurt there. I guess thats what happens when you have cameras on you. Hope you feel better.
Hi Meredith,
Felt your pain this morning...ouch!
Wonderful interview with a very funny but positive look at figure skating.
Should I send my daughter Meredith to skate in your place tomorrow. She'd love to.
Sending best wishes from the Ice at the Park, Arlington Texas
You go girl...remember it's all about attitude (and practice).
Dear Merideth:
Glad you are feeling better after your skating mishap! I love your blog! Your writing skills are tremendous. You honesty is refreshing and entertaining. Keep up the good work!
Rich in California
I really am glad that you are on the Today show now. You are a breath of fresh air. While I understand that you needed to poke fun at yourself after you skating mishap, but I think it's kind of irresponsible of you at the same time. I won't let my child skate without a helmet for the same reason that you shouldn't, obviously. You could've turned that event into a "teachable moment," instead of trying to "save face". It really wasn't entertaining. I shut off your program after that segment.
Common sense is relatively uncommon and this fiasco proves it. Meredith, I like you, but you already fell twice, don't you think it is too risky to try it again? Remember the adage, "three strikes and you are out" ? Are you prepared for a concussion, amnesia, coma? Use your head girl and don't take a risk again.
I enjoy all the skaters that appear on the show. Ice skating is so much harder than it looks. I am 49 and take ice skating lessons to the amusement of my husband. Do the sports stars ever give you lessons? Why don't you let viewers tag along when you get to live another one of your dreams like Radio City or Broadway?
I'm 62 and started taking lessons last fall because I love the beauty of skating. I fell backwards and cracked my skull on the ice in January and again two weeks ago. Wow what a head ache. The days following were much worse but I refuse to quit. I just need to relax and enjoy skating. Good luck on you next try. I have started to wear a helmet. I don't want to bang my head on the ice again.
Poor thing, next time send Natalie on the ice, I've seen her skate before, she might be a little better than you at it...feel better
Hi,
First of all I just want to say that I really love you in the Today Show better than in the View. It looks like you have more fun and that you are enjoying yourself more. I hope your head is feeling better and good luck tommorrow interviewing John Header.
Did you hear that Joy Behar sent out her best wishes to you on "The View" today (3/27)after you hit your head yesterday? They all sent out their love to you and hope you feel better!
Why do they always make you women do this on camera stunt stuff? Let's see Matt make an idjit of himself once in a while. Just to know that Pretty boy isn't perfect! Seriously though, listen to your lawyer, Ferrell has some deep pockets!
I feel your pain Meredith. last year we where having a dinner party outside and I decided to put up the patio unbrella by myself, wrong thing to do. And fell backwards and knocked myslef out on to the patio. I had my son bring me to the hospital, since our guests from Mexico where on the way over to our house. It will take a very long time to feel normal again.
hope your feeling better. Hi to everyon else on the Today show..
I love your Blog because you write about ordinary things that have also been part of my life. You are tops in my book.
Meredith:
I'm so glad you're ok. You were on my mind all day. That was some fall you took yesterday. I know your head had to have been throbbing this am. What impressed me most about you was that you didn't miss a beat after the fall. You got up and carried on with your interview as if nothing happened. You're the ultimate professional and a trooper at that. Please, ease up on the crazy stunts. I would hate to see you severely injured. I need to get my daily fix of Matt, Meredith, Al and Ann in the mornings.
Slightly off topic: A few questions....
(1) What's your relationship like with the women of Today, specifically Ann and Natalie? I was reading an article in NY Times where Ann said she'd grown very close to you. I can't say that I was surprised to hear this.
(2) Have you spoken to Star Jones since both of you left The View? During a recent interview she said she hadn't spoken to anyone from The View since her departure. I sort of found it hard to believe that you two haven't spoken.
Meredith,
you are a TRUE sport for continuing the way you did. I felt the pain as you fell, and I really hope you are feeling better...PLEASE stay off the ice! Always keep your well-being in mind.
A couple of weeks ago, I went out to bring in the trash can. Just as I started pulling the empty can up the driveway, my foot caught the only patch of ice on the entire driveway and down I went with the trash can on top of me! When I realized I hadn't broken anything, my only thought was, of course, how many neighbors saw me fall!
I think that you are a breath of fresh air to the Today show, Meredith. Besides being intelligent and well spoken, I have always loved your mellow voice.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE YOU Girlfriend. You are the best way to start the day. That head bump you took on the ice was a pretty significant "boo boo" kiddo, you be careful and take care of yourself... I've posted before and I'll post again, you have really enhanced the TODAY show with your contributions. The whole dynamic and "vibe" of the show has changed for the better and I wouldn't miss you. I can't wait to see you and the gang at the Olympics. And by the way, your son and the cooking segments are so sweet; his interest & participation are a real treat, thanks for sharing him with us. I genuinely admire how much you seem to be able to juggle and still maintain such a positive persona. You hang in there chickie-baby, you're doing a fantastic job!
Stephanie in Lansing, MI
Hi Meredith,
I hope you are feeling better from your fall, it was a hard one. I love you on the show. It's a lot better since you came on. Keep up the great work.
Take care
Maryellen

Ouch! Oh my gosh! I know that hurt and you just keep smiling all through it, good for you, because to be honest with you, when they kept showing that same clip on Tuesday over and over of you falling, it almost made me literally sick to my stomach, I think one time would have been enough for me! Guess you're tougher than what I would be, maybe, I don't know! You're wonderful and I LOVE the show and how everyone gets along so well! Keep up the good work!
Meredith, this morning you commented on both your skating accident and your cracked teeth. I'll bet you cracked them when you fell and the steak just seemed to be the cause. I had a similar instance where I thought pudding had cracked my tooth!! Then I remembered a jarring fall the day before. You might want to have the dentist do full x-rays to see if you've cracked anything else. That was a whopper of a fall and you probably chomped down really hard.
Allison in Ponte Vedra, FL
Meridith. My oldest son, now in his 40s chipped one of his front teeth with a slip at the beach. He landed on his behind but did not realize that he had clenched his teeth as he fell. The impact was just enough to chip a tooth. The odd thing was that it did not hurt and did not come off until the next day. Sound a little familiar??
Meredith,
Can you tell me the name/maker of the shoes (heels) that you wear that have colored bottoms. I think you had heels on one day this week with red bottoms.
They/you look great.
Thank you,
Debbie
not on the head, don't worry about it!
try this on for size. i was two and was playing in my parent's living room when i suddenly busted my head open on my mother's wooden coffe table. it was so bad that i had to have stitches. 19 years later i still have the scar to show for it.
"Perhaps you should consider a helmet. Not just for the ice - but for life in general. :-)"
exactly!
Hey Nancy Kerrigan,
First of all, I just want to say that painful as it was, there's no reason to call yourself an 'idiot.' That is what ice skating rinks are for... Falling. You may get the occasional good skater out on them, as a fluke or something, but for the most part, they were built to support all the websites that post funny home / news videos.
Secondly, I can't believe people are honestly saying in complete seriousness that you should've worn a helmet. For that matter, you might as well wear one while delivering the news as well. That's just paranoid. You can't live like that.
I live in Pennsylvania, and fall on my ass no less than 100 times each winter - on the sidewalk, front steps, you name it. ALWAYS, in public. At least people expect soneone to fall on an ice rink. It's kind of hard to repair an ego when you bust your head open trying to check your mailbox every morning from December - Feb.
You rock, Meredith. Next time, send Al under Will Ferrel's legs!!
Will totally let go of you and let you fall!
kEEP ON BEING A GOOF BALL,THATS WHT MAKE YOU THE GREATEST FEMALE ON TV!!!!!!
Meredith,
You are the best! I am so HAPPY that you are on the Today show. Don't ever leave. You are such a joy and such a professional. Thank you for joining the Today show. I look forward to seeing you every morning. I know you are on vacation this week. I'm sure you need it after the week you had. So, Have a great week. Looking forward to your return next Monday.
Best,
Jill
I found myself praying for you as you went down, and afterwards. I hope you are better. ♥
Hi Meredith,
I hope you are feeling better! I'm so sorry about your fall! Despite your fall, I'm sure it was a great interview with Will Ferrell. He is one funny guy!
Take Care,
Rob
Hi Meredith,
I was very touched by your interview with Cookie about breast cancer. I would like to know there is life after a mastectory. I had one 17 years ago. I just thought to myself. I am woman. I am strong. Don't know if my kids, grandkids, and dear husband need me. BUT I sure need them. I want towatch a few do their cheerleading, watch a few soccer meets, watch a few swim meets, see a few weddings, see a few great-grandchildren. I've had it all. Think positive Cookie. Cancer has taught me to really enjoy each day. Every day is a treasure. I am 75 and so very blessed with so many good friens and an incredible family. My oldest, Debbie, is my favorite as she is my first born. My Son, Reg, is my favorite as he is my only son, My youngest, Linda, is my favorite as she is my baby. How luchy can you get. Live and enjoy every day. Priceless!
First off.
What is wrong with you people?
saying it was funny.
That is unbelievable to me, for someone to think
you hitting your head, is funny.
You could be seriously injured... for up to 5 years from now
Anyone who laughs at that should get THEIR head bashed into the ice, and then see; if they laugh...
Secondly,
It was so obvious that Will let go, and let you fall. Perhaps anything for good
tv.
You should sue him for millions.
He could have held on to you, and prevented you from falling.
It was clearly his fault.
Finally,
I hope your employer, sent you to a brain specialist, for an MRI, to make sure you're OK.
I had a head injury, similar to yours, and am still feeling the effects.
I hope you are feeling better, and please don't down play it, it wasn't your fault.
Your not an idiot, and it's not funny.
Take care, Laura
