Curveball

Have you ever done anything like this?

I’m watching the Boston Red Sox vs. the Cleveland Indians last night. It’s game 7—do or die time. Whoever wins will be going on to the World Series.

As you may know, I’ve been a Boston fan since I was little because I grew up in Rhode Island. To love the Red Sox is to know true suffering—they’ve only won the World Series once in my lifetime and have developed a reputation for "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory."

I discovered a long time ago that whenever I would watch them play a game on television, inevitably they would lose. Call me superstitious, but I decided that the fate of the Red Sox rested with me and my remote.

As I got older I realized, of course, that the two had nothing to do with each other. But that old superstition rears its head in these pivotal games, and last night was no exception.

By the bottom of the 7th inning Boston was ahead by three runs, and I began to feel the sweat on my forehead. Do I continue to watch and possibly cost them a post-season celebration? Do I shut off the TV immediately? And, if I do, then why did I bother to stay up in the first place, knowing I had to get to work in the morning?

I turned the TV to "mute" as I pondered my options and tried to regain my composure. I spent the next minute sneaking peeks at the screen and then finally turned it off.

In the time it took me to walk up the staircase, brush my teeth, organize my work for the morning, lay down in bed, change my mind, get up again, and then walk back down the staircase, and turn the TV back on, the Sox had gained six more runs.

I don’t want to take full credit for the fact that they are going to the World Series. But we will never know what could’ve happened to Boston, if I had continued to watch the game.

As for the World Series, I plan to watch it. (On and off, of course.)

First off I'd like you to know I never watched The Today Show at all till you came on now I never miss it. (Loved you on the View)I'm not supersticious but I could see how a person could get to be.Good Luck for the sox in the world series

Meredith, as a fellow Rhode Islander, Providence Quaker school alum and Red Sox fan, I say this with love... please make sure you have plans outside of the home during the World Series! Let's not risk it!

Hi Meredith,

I'm all for the Sox winning. But I was disappointed to see how you and your co-hosts handled talking about Juanes this morning. It showed a lack of cultural awareness. You don't have to promote him necessarily but it seemed like you all were mocking his name.

Regarding your unbelievably cocky comment about "it's safe to say that the Red Sox have won the world series", it is emblematic of your - and so many others - strident East Coast bias. Oh my but I so want the Rockies to win just to spite YOU!

Hey, whatever works for you! I have got some pretty crazy superstitions of my own But then again, don't we all?...right we all do right....

I too am off & on superstitious, but this time it won't matter if you turn your tv off, my Rockies will be the winners. It's our year. Sorry.

Meredith, like you, I was born & bred in R.I. and have been a Red Sox fan all my life. I have been in St. Louis for 25 years, but still remain true to the Sox. Last night I got out my Red Sox cap & wore it through the entire game.........Here's hoping they win the World Series! Go Red Sox!

Too funny! My mom is a huge Jeff Gordon fan and she does the same thing with the races. She even has a "racing" outfit she has to wear. It's nice to know she's not the only "crazy" fan!

Meredith,
I saw you on the Today Show this morning. Regarding your superstition, I think you have already jinxed your Sox by saying you "watched them win the World Series" last night. However, as a Colorado native and Rockies fan, I encourage you to WATCH the Rockies beat your beloved Red Sox!!

Go Rockies!!

Thanks, have a good day Brendo.

Hey Meredith,

This is Mark English. I'm not sure if you remember me, but I served with you on jury duty up in White Plains back in the summer of 2002. I hope all is well with you, and congrats on the success your having at the Today show.

My e-mail is JMEnglish@gmail.com if you'd like to get in touch.

Hey Meredith,

I had written a previous comment and for some reason it was not posted.

I served Jury Duty with you back in the summer of 2002 in White Plains.

I just wanted to say hi!...and that I hope all is well.

Best of luck with your success at the Today Show.

Hey Meredith! I'm very glad that your Red Sox Nation is no longer lumped together with the Cubs as the "Loveable Losers" of the MLB. One thing that I do want to call out is you saying on yesterday's broadcast that the Sox had won the World Series. I'm glad that Matt corrected you. As a Denver resident, I've been a firsthand witness to most of the amazing streak that the Rockies have been on. Winning 21 of 22 games is no fluke, so don't discount the Rockies! They deserve respect, and I think they may surprise a lot of people who are underestimating them. May the best team win!

I'm a huge Sox fan, also having grown up in RI on The Hill. As the years have passed so has my supersitions about watching the Red Sox in a crucial game. Since winning it all in 2004 I now watch them with more confidence in their ability to win the big game. Wouldn't it be fantastic to see the Patriots and Red Sox become champions of their sports in the same year! Tom Brady will surpass all the records currently held QB's like Unitas, Favre, Montana, and Marino. I currently live in Memphis, but my heart will always be in New England. Go ahead and watch those Sox. The come back kids won't let you down! Sox in 6.

Hi Meredith,

I used to feel that way about the Sox too. I'd change the channel so I wouldn't jinx them somehow.
Now I feel they need me to watch! I feel like I have to send my positive vibes their way...that we all do.
I feel it even more strongly when I'm at the game. I got to go to game six when someone gave me tickets...for free! People who know me were glad because they know that the Sox always win when I go. Now if I could just get tickets to the World Series!! I'm ready if someone wants to send me...Boston or Denver!
Go Sox!!

I used to be superstitious for a time when it was college hoops season as I stood by my Kentucky Wildcats (and still stand by the 'Cats today!!) I would actually not watch games and UK would win virtually every one of them. But that was many years ago in my teen-ie years.
Today, I watch UK from beginning to end whenever possible, and with me living in upstate New York now, I better have the Mac fired up for live streaming video of any games that are not on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNHD, ESPN2HD, CBS, College SportsTV, yadda, yadda, yadda.
I'm a college hoops JUNKIE!! I'll watch lots of any games, and I am partial to Duke, Xavier (OH), Indiana, Purdue.
Oh, and Dick Vitale (ESPN) can call my games anytime!!!

AWESOME, BAY-BEEE!
Joe :) LOL

this is the first time I have read your blog. I just want to tell you that I can"t get to watch the today show very often but when I do I think you are doing a great job on there. I did watch you on the view and enjoyed you on there as well keep up the good work. And good luck for your team in the series.

Tony said:

I'm afraid, Meredith, that you must share credit for the Sox win. Like you, my extremely superstitious personality emerges when watching the Sox. In game 7, I could only watch the game when Cleveland was pitching...hence I was about only half of the game.
So, because of you, me, a few million others and (what the heck), the supremely talented Red Sox, our boys are going to the series.

Hi Meredith,
I forgot to mention something else....
Check out your nearest Hallmark store. Remember the dancing and singing snowman and penguins from last year? Well, they're baaaaaack! :)
This year the snowman, a penguin, and a little dog are "riding" on a sled, dancing and singing (and barking) to a version of the song "Sleigh Ride". It's really cute!! I'll have to get mine soon.
And yes, I still have my snowman and penguins from last year.....actually, they have been in my room with other plush snowmen all year long!!

Enjoy!
Joe :)

I have to ask. For the past two days other international news sources have been reporting on the very flawed audit of Dyncorp(billions of US tax dollars???), and the resignation of State Dept. HI MEREDITH, I WAS A CONTESTANT ON MILLIONAIRE THAT WAS TAPED ON SEPT 12TH. I HAD A WONDERFUL TIME AND ENJOYED EVERY MOMENT. I SENT YOU AN EMAIL AFTER GETTING YOUR NOTE, BUT JUST FOUND IT IN MY "DRAFTS"FOLDER, UNSENT. PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR NOT SENDING IT OUT LAST MONTH. YOU ARE A GRACIOUS HOSTESS, MAKING ME FEEL COMPLETLY AT EASE. IF I COULD HAVE WON A FEW MORE DOLLARS, I WOULD HAVE BEEN A LITTLE HAPPIER, BUT EVEN SO IT WAS TRULY ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS IN MY LIFE. THANK YOU AGAIN. Roll out the tortilla Chips & dip, breakout your favorite fuzzy slippers (I know you own a pair) and watch The BoSox win another ring. That's all you need to do. You have Kurt "BloodSock" Schilling, the nastiest pitcher whose stuff make Ty Cobb's meanspiritedness look a choirboy , and a bullpen that is top notch. The Rox are a nice story, but they haven't face the kind of evil pitching in the postseason like the kind the Sox have.

Soo..get the Lazy Boy "broken in", and a few friends and just relax that anxiety away...

Merideth,
I grew up in Boston and love the Red Sox. My husband is a huge Sox fan too even though we now live in Florida. He watches every game he can and follows them on;line when they are not on TV. In 2004 he only watched the 8th and 9th inning of game 4 of the World Series because he felt the same superstition you speak about here. My own quirk is that I will not watch when the opponents are up to bat. We have such a long history with the sox and as my husband says "they can tear your heart out"

Wow, all of you people complaining are really rushing to judgment. Did any of you bother to read the first paragraph of Meredith's post from Oct. 19th? I miss the blog too, but it sounds like she's extremely busy. Have any of you bothered to ask if she's OK or how she's feeling? Perhaps you should give her a break instead of beating her up. You are being extremely rude and self-centered. Maybe we don't deserve to have a blog from her if this is how you people are going to behave.

Hi Meredith,
First, congrats on your Sox!! :)
Now you have an unbeaten N.E. Patriots that seems to be crusin' for another Super Bowl. If the Pats win it all, I think all of N.E. will go nuts!!!! Then it would be called Red Sox Nation and Patriot Nation!
Never mind the rude bloggers asking you where you are and why you haven't blogged for so long.....I am a full-time student and work 20-25 hours a week as well as do 2-3 hours of fieldwork a week, and I am pretty damn lucky to get the time to write a blog to you (this being my only blog in a week). I know how you feel when you are super busy like me.
To the rude ones: Meredith is simply busy cranking out about 170 episodes of Millionaire in only a 90 to 100 day spread (last year it was done over a 140 day spread, so she had more time to blog this same time last year), not to mention, of course, TODAY and related NBC News assignments.......Give her a BREAK!!!!

Otherwise, Peace,
Joe :)

I'm struck by the emotions that come out in responses to blogs, not just here, but in all of blogsphere. What an interesting phenomenon blogging and commenting on blogs is. It feels so intimate, and yet none of us know each other. People seem to feel abandoned, people attack and defend meredith and one another. Yes, I know, it sounds like a lot of psychobabble on my part. I was just struck by some of the characteristics I see on the blogs I visit from time to time, especially the level of vitriol and judgment. Just throwing an observation out there. Hope Meredith has time/is able to post soon, as I enjoy her writing immensely.

Hey Mer, I was at the dentist the other day. While I was waiting for my appointment, I read an interesting magazine article. Did you know, medical scientists now believe, that peanut butter is linked to Multiple Sclerosis!
Apparently, the preservatives added in order to increase it's shelf life, irritates M.S. genes in people who's systems are sensitive to these preservative chemicals. An alternative to commercial store-bought peanut butter, is, "natural" peanut butter. Found in health stores, consumer's can pick fresh peanuts, crush them in a machine, and make their own.(Nothing added, of course.)

I understand if you whine loud enough you can get more money for your blog. After all, the $millions your getting now for your two hours a day just isn't enough. Blow your nose, Mer, go for the jugular.
