Friday Q&A: Halloween, Millionaire and High School!

Every Friday, Meredith answers your questions!

OCTOBER 19, 2007

I’m down to the last three weeks of shooting Millionaire, and it’s been so intense that I’ve had to run out of here every day—so I’ve missed blogging. Hopefully I’ll be back up to speed real soon. But keep those questions coming. Have a great weekend. Love, Mer

Mer... Halloween is coming up! What are you going to be this year? Hopefully you won’t get stuck in the clamshell as Bette Midler again! Do you like Halloween?
Posted by Betsy on October 17 at 03:31pm

First of all, I love Halloween. I have two bins in my basement full of old costumes, wigs, makeup, you name it. Every year I take out the stuff and put it on the dining room table in the days leading up to Halloween and encourage everybody to play dress up. No one ever does anymore—just me (and occasionally Jasper, our dog). As for the show, I can’t tell you what we’re going to be this year, but it’s going to be great. And it won’t involve a clamshell…

Who's that guy who comes to the set and talks to you during the breaks on Millionaire?
Love you, Gary
(Don't worry...I'm not a stalker...just a HUGE gay fan!)

You must have been in the audience at Millionaire. "That guy" you are referring to is Rich Sirop, the show’s supervising producer. He and I meet before the tapings and he briefs me on all the contestants. During the breaks, we chat about where I might want to take the conversation once the commercial is over. He’s a great guy, and a wonderful producer.

When you were in high school - what "crowd" did you fit into? Were you a nerd? A cheerleader? A band geek? I loved the movie The Breakfast Club - and I was like Ally Sheedy in that movie, the outsider and weirdo. How about you, Meredith???

I was a "floater" in high school, meaning I was never part of one particular group. I actually never liked the whole group mentality because it tended to be exclusive. But if I had to describe myself back then, I was sort of shy, an athlete but not a "superstar", a serious student, very involved in theater, and I also headed up the chapel committee. I went to a Quaker school and I would help find guests to talk to the students.

Feel free to post a question of your own for next time!

Dear Meredith,
Love the show! I was wondering if you have a favorite book and what is on your nightstand now?
Thanks!

Hi, from Westport, MA. Wondering if your family still lives in this area? Also, do your children attend schools with other kids whose parents are famous? What is it like for them having their mother on TV?

Meredith,
I read your article in Good Housekeeping and you said your idea of heaven is puttering around the house. Because you said your idea of heaven is puttering when you had your two weeks off did you go on vacation or did you just spend at time at home? Also you said you have spirituality not a religion do you and Richard ever take the kids to church or teach them your religous beliefs?.

Sincerely,
Rachael S.

I think my favorite part of Halloween anymore is seeing what my grandkids dress up as. :-) They are 1, (2) three year olds, 1 six, 1 seven and one 13, so I get to see the wide range of costumes from the baby on up! And going with 4 out of six of them to the mall for trick or treating. Getting to be the observer now instead of the one putting it all together, is nice.

Blessings,
Linda

Hi Meredith!
I liked your article in Good Housekeeping! I liked those little Thanksgiving "statues" you put on your T'Day table.
With you being a big Beatles fan, I was wondering if you ever got into the solo music of Paul McCartney (including his band Wings), George Harrison, John Lennon (and Yoko), and Ringo Starr ("Photograph")?
Also wondered if you ever really got into 80s music (at 42, it's one of my favorite music genres) and if you have any favorite songs from that decadent decade. :)

Bye for now,
Joe :)

How do they insure that the phone friends on Millionaire are available? Do the contestants provide a list beyond what is needed, and the people are dialed to see if they will be available?

Thank you,
Linda

Meridith,

I love the pants you have on this morning, Monday, October, 22. Where might they be available to purchase.

Thank you.

Hi Meredith,
My mom thought the tops you had on last week (10/15-19/07)looked terrific. That being said now she would like to find them. The top looked like a sweater - crossed over the chest and had buttons on the side at the hip. She said you had one in black and one in apple green. I would like to get her one for the holidays. Thank you for your time.

A Millionaire question for some future Friday: it's agonizing for me to watch someone struggle over an answer when I know the correct answer. You always know the correct answer. Must drive you crazy sometimes.

Hi Meredith!
You look fabulous on the cover of Good Housekeeping! Great story. How in the world are you going to host Thanksgiving at your house AND host the Macy's parade??! I know both will be loads of fun... you are the hostess with the mostess!!!
Your wooden pilgrims and native americans are fantastic. My mom has some similar that she uses every year that I am hoping to bring home one day!
Thanks you being great!

Meredith,

You do an excellent job on Today! I was curious, though. How are your substitutes selected when you and Matt are on vacation/assignment? I know that Ann has always filled in for you, and she does a great job, but I was wondering if there is a specific order, i.e., Is Ann your designated substitute and Lester/David for Matt? Thanks!

Meridith,
at what point should a first time mom at age 37 get a mamongram? there is no family history of breast cancer that i know of. I do however have diabetes along with anxiety/depresion.

Is there a connection with the "Matthew
Cohen" listed as a producer in the credits
following "Millionaire"?

Hoping so!

Do you know anyone in California affected by the fires? Will you be traveling out there to cover it, you think? My sister and brother-in-law had to evacuate with their 3 kids.

Sorry if you've talked about this before!!! I'm curious: but do you have a favorite season? Also: Are you a big gardener????

Or do you prefer the winter months?

Thanks, Meredith!

I agree with all the posters who said that you look beautiful every morning. I'm just wondering - what do you wear in your off hours - you know, hanging out with the family, teachers' conferences, going out for a casual dinner? Do you take those lovely Today Show clothes home with you?

Steve said:

Hi! As a Tufts freshman stuck in Haskell Hall, I'm curious, what dorms did you stay in while you were here? Also, is there anything I must do before I graduate, other than the infamous Naked Quad Run? Thanks!

Hi Meredith,
I was wondering if you believe in God? Do you and your family ever go to church?

Also, one more question. Are the clothes that you, ann, matt, natalie and al wear all your own or do they come from the wardrobe department at TODAY? I've always wonder about that every morning as I am watching the show. Please answer mine!!

Dear Meredith,

What an interesting surprize it was to tune in on Halloween morning and find the cast of The Today Show dressed as The Munsters. You all looked quite adorable and I found Matt's costume a marked improvement over his usual drab attire. However, please be advised that The Munsters was a CBS program! Such disloyalty is simply intolerable.

Spirited DONA SAYS THAT SHE IS ONE RELIEVED DONA TO FIND OUT YOU WERE A "FLOATER" IN HIGH SCHOOL,TOO. EVERYBODY CALLS IT SOMETHING DIFFERENT, BUT I CAN DESCRIBE IT. THE POPULAR KIDS AND THE GEEKS RESPECTED ME, BUT THEY WERE SCARED OF LOOSING THEIR REPUTATIONS BY SITTING BY ME AT LUNCH, PEP RALLIES. I WAS ACTUALLY DOING A COMEDY ROUTINE IN MY HEAD ON THEIR FEARS OF SOCIAL DECLINE, AS THEIR CHRACTER DECLINE WAS SO OBVIOUS! THEY CALLED IT "NORMAL", AS OPPOSED TO "FLOATER ON LIZZIE MGuire. I DID HOMEWORK, PUBLIC SPEAKING , SINGING, AND HARD TIME, FOR BEING A GOOD GIRL.
MEREDITH, MAYBE WE WERE THE GREATEST! AND "THEY" WERE UNUSUAL! YOU CAN ONLY GET A SUPPORT SYSTEM, SADLY, "AFTER" YOUR ADULTS, LIKE US. YOU MADE ME FEEL BETTER, NOT HIDING IN GROUPS OR CONFORMING, JUST LIKE SPIRITED DONA! PEOPLE RESPECT AND LIKE YOU, AND YOU MAKE PEOPLE SUCH AS ME, FEEL LIKE WE'RE ALRIGHT, SUCCESSFUL, TYPES, TOO!

I HOPE TO BE PINNED BY AN EXCITING GUY, AS I WATCH THE PATTY DUKE SHOW AND MY FAVORTE SONG IS "YOU CAN'T SIT DOWN" BY THE DOVELLS. YOU HAVE TO SUPPORT A WOMAN WHO WEARS A PSYCHEDELIC AND BLACK WITCH'S HAT! I WILL TRY TO MAKE A LINK,BUT TYPE IN "HAPPY HALLOWEEN 30 ROCK" IN ( YOUR SEARCH ENGINE } AND YOU SHOULD SEE IT ON YAHOO VIDEOS. http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=1386057 I DID MY OWN FUN VIDEO AND MEREDITH, "MISS ROCKEFELLER CENTER", HERSELF IS ON "30 ROCK". "FLOATERS" RULE!

Would you have facial plastic surgery? If you have already, let me know who did it because you look beautiful. But if you haven't, please don't do it. You have a lovely face and some face lifts make people unrecognizable. I would hate to turn on the Today Show and not recognize you.

You've worn that fabulous red ruffled wrap at least a couple times now - PLEASE tell us who makes that wrap. I would love to purchase it.

Judging from comments on your wardrobe, NBC should start a blog just for wardrobe questions - perhaps answered by the wardrobe department? Just a thought.
I'll keeping watching every morning.

Hi Meredith,
JUst wanted to say I hope your daughter is feling well by now. You are my favorite female on TV. I never use to watch Millioaire until you started on it. I loved the srticle on you in the Good Housekeeping magazine also. You are a decicated journalist, as well as a devoted mother and wife to your kids and husband. I respect you for that. I hope you could take a bit of time to look at my website. You will see a bit of where I live and see my family. Keep up the good work and as long as you are on TV, It will be a pleasure to turn it on.
My thrill of a lifetime would be to meet you one day, just to shake your hand.
Take care and all the best to you and your family.

Meredith, How was it determined who would go where this week on the Today Show? Thanks.....Carolyn

Hello again Meredith,
I forgot to ask my question when I posted on Nov 6th. Have you ever been to Nova Scotia Canada? It's a beautiful Province of Canada on the East coast. Shelly Long from Cheers came here to the Island where I live and I had the pleasure of servering her at my nieces Cafe here on the Island. She was with a group preserving the whales.
