Friday Q&A: Superstitions, Accents, and Millionaire Mysteries Solved
Every Friday, Meredith answers your questions. Feel free to post a question of your own for next time.
OCTOBER 12, 2007
I told kids for 40 years to say Rabbit-Rabbit on the first day of the month for good luck. I also told them that they had to say it before their feet hit the floor that morning. I retired from teaching fifth and sixth grade last year. Where did you hear about rabbit-rabbit?

I first heard it from friends in elementary school. I never knew you were supposed to say it before your feet hit the floor that morning. One of my problems with this monthly "Rabbit Rabbit" routine is that I talk out loud to myself. So by the time I remember it’s the first day of the month, I’ve already been mouthing-off. (But come to think of it, maybe that shouldn’t count—it’s like a tree falling in the woods: If nobody hears it, does it make a sound?)
My daughter volunteers on a local television Channel. She is a Sophomore in high school and loves doing this, however she talks through her nose, any encouraging advise?? She is a great reader, and uses expression, but there’s a definite ‘nasal’. It's a delicate situation as I do not want to cause doubt in her ability.

There are so many accents and voices on television these days that are distinctive and different—I’m not sure that it will be a problem for her. If you are concerned, you might seek out a vocal coach but one word of caution: When I first started in local news, all the reporters were sent for vocal training. I refused, because they all sounded the same to me with that "anchor voice."
With tapings of 07-08 Millionaire season from late-July to early Nov. (compared to the tapings of the 06-07 season having been done from late July to early Dec.), does this mean there will be more repeats of "Millionaire" this season (07-08) than last season (06-07)?

We still tape the same number of shows, we just tape more in a week.

Meredith,
You have a nervous habit of biting your lip. It could be dangerous if you're wearing one of the brands of lipstick that contain lead. Better check on the ingredients.
On a recent episode of "Who wants to be a millionaire?" hosted by Merideth, the question was asked- "Yemen is the only country whose name starts with the letter "Y." What continent is it on?"
Regardless of the answer, what about Yugoslavia?
Meredith! You are on the "Go Fug Yourself" website today...not because you look bad (you don't) but because of who you ended up in a picture with....

Ray - Yugoslavia ceased to exist in 2003. All 6 countries that made up Yugoslavia are now separate individual entities.
Meredith - My family says "Rabbit Rabbit" on the first of each month also! My husband was the person who got us in this habit. He will leave notes on our children's alarm clocks with the words written out to remind them to say it! I'll try anything that's supposedly going to give you good luck! Keep up the great work!
Hello Gorgeous!
I just saw a recap of your career on an E t.v. segment about The View and you've come along way, Baby! (And yes, I'm talking about your looks!)
If you keep this up, it won't be long until you're crowned the next Miss America.
P.S. Who's that guy who comes to the set and talks to you during the breaks on Millionaire?
Love you, Gary
(Don't worry...I'm not a stalker...just a HUGE gay fan!)
Meredith - I am a fan of yours from all those years on the View and your new job on Today. However, I just have to say that I am so disappointed that you had to bring Rosie into your chat with Trump. You are just adding fuel to the fire. I thought she was your friend. You let him get away with calling her a degenerate -- once again, as well other offensive verbage. Is it because he is affiliated with NBC that you let him say whatever he wants? Rosie works tirelessly to help others, especially financially. What does he do??? I think it's about time you and others step up to the plate for her. Enough already.
Hi Meredith,
I am a Colorado native and know you are a big Red Sox Fan. Even though the Sox are down right now to the Indians, I believe the Red Sox will be meeting the Colorado Rockies in the World Series. What do you think? If the Sox and Rockies do meet, are you a little nervous given that the Rockies have won the last 21 out of 22 games?
Go Rockies and Love you on the Today show!!
Darla
Mere... halloween is coming up! What are you going to be this year? Hopefully you wont' get stuck in the clamshell as Bette Midler again! Do you like Halloween?
When you were in high school - what "crowd" did you fit into? Were you a nerd? A cheerleader? A band geek? I loved the movie The Breakfast Club - and I was like Ally Sheedy in that movie, the outsider and weirdo. How about you, meredith???
I just saw a piece on Friday's show about birth order & how it affects siblings personalities. I've seen a good bit on these dynamics before and they interest me. My question is about twins (& higher order multiples). I have a 6-year-old daughter and 3-year-old twin boys. Do the dynamics change if the birth order is so close? The boys were only born a minute apart. Do you know if any studies have been done on that? I think it would be interesting to look at.
I saw your segment today on Hoda's surgery. A group of my friends and I have developed a way of making having a mammagram "fun". I think what we do would be of interest to you and other women. I would like to get this info to you, but I can't seem to get a way to do it.
Dear Meredith,
After passing the test second in our
group, I was so heartsick to learn I had
been eliminated. The staff said I would
make it. I have to agree with the woman
who asked the question on the show "Are
Only Young People Allowed To Be On?"
After watching you taped 9 shows and
watching the program for years now, I
see the cutoff point is about 40. Is
this legal? What about age discrimination? If it only applies to
the workplace, would yoo like it if it
applied to your audience? We are mainly
OVER 40. Is it as it seems to be that
no one can earn over 16,000 anymore?
After that there are "trick" questions
meant to mislead. I intend to write
to AARP letters to the Editor and ask
them to investigater this.
Meredith, you are mispronouncing ANTARCTICA. Pronounce both c's.
