Bite the Bullet

Boy, it’s a good thing you didn’t see me yesterday—I had a cracked front tooth. Actually, it’s the eighth time I’ve cracked the same tooth. The dentist keeps fixing it with this bonding, but yesterday he told me I have to bite the bullet (as if that’s even possible) and get veneers.

The thought of any of my teeth being filed down to a point so they can be covered with a veneer makes me queasy. With my luck, the veneer would fall off in the middle of an on-air interview, sending the interviewee screaming into Rockefeller Plaza while viewers across the country grabbed for their remotes before innocent children could be traumatized. Anyway, I’ll keep you "posted." (A little dental humor there.)

It’s not like I had much to smile about on Sunday morning, anyway. At 5AM, my son Ben left to go back to college in California. I had convinced myself that once he came home for Thanksgiving he’d remember how good he had it, and decide to transfer to a school closer to home. There was no question he was excited about being back in New York—even the cold air felt good to him. But then he spent a morning in a department store being pushed around by holiday shoppers and decided he missed the more laid-back California scene. The truth is I’m glad he’s loving college, but it was hard to let him go again. But as my friend Angela’s mom always used to say, “Life is a series of 'hellos' and 'goodbyes.'" Or, as my husband Richard put it, "Get used to it." Both are right.

Still, I’m a bit out of sorts. This morning for the first time since taking this job I forgot my contact lenses at home, and had to wear my glasses. I can’t decide if I’ve created a new "look" for myself—or if now you’re the ones cracking up.

A. The glasses looked great.
B. My son is a senior in college. He felt the same way as Ben when he came home. REAL excited to get here and then after 2 days couldn't wait to get back to school.
C. I'll warn you - it's harder to say good-bye to our kids when they leave from home than it is to say good-bye to them and you leave them. There's something about having them leave "home" that makes it so much harder than us leaving them. I still, after 4 years, cry every time I say good-bye.
D. Nice hair toss this morning!
E. Keep up the great work!

I know what you are going through Meredith in terms of "losing" your children. Mine have been out of the home for years (in their 40's now)but the 3 of them married within a year and a half of each other so life changed quickly. You will get used to it and will develop a whole new way of nurturing yourself and your husband over time.I think the benefit of the "empty nest" syndrome is for our own spiritual, mental, and emotional growth. Eventually, it feels good. Love you on the show. Keep being You.

Meredith,
Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. I had no school today so I enjoyed watching you. By the way I liked you with the glasses I think you should wear them on air more often.

You couldn't look bad if you tried! The librarian look is good for you but why don't you have a spare set of contacts (or two) in your office?

Did Ben bring home pink underwear (from washing them with his new sweatshirt)?

Hey its me George and I just wanted to say that you look great! So easy to create a buzz. You look very sexy in your black frames and top. Inshalla I will meet and work with yall! Until next time....

Loved the glasses this morning!!

It's good to switch things up every now and then:)

Keeps us viewers on our toes....will she wear them, won't she;-)

I like the glasses. People should stop worrying about the "youthful" look. The glasses give you a studious look - which makes me feel like you've done your homework.

MEREDITH YOU LOOKED GORGIOUS WITH THE GLASSES. YOU COLD HAVE RAGS ON AND YOU WOULD LOOK GOOD. A BIG FAN. BERNARD

Meredith,

The glasses looked great this morning! I really thought you were going for a new look. Also, don't be so critical about yourself. When you wear glasses and crack your teeth, you become more human to the rest of us, which only makes people like you more. No quesiton from me, just good luck with the veneers! :)

Loved the glasses and you always look great.
I bet your cute dog was as glad to see Ben as his "people" roomies were.
You are missed when you are not on the show.

I LOVE the glasses. I agree with Matt, Al and the posters here. It's a look you should keep.

I thought the glasses were wonderful. Very flattering. Wish I looked that good in mine!!

Great look with the glasses!

I prefer the studious look from people who deliver serious stories. So many times the people who tell us what's happening think it's them

and don't afford the stories the respect they deserve. It shouldn't be irreverence at all costs.

I know I'm not the first to suggest this, but why don't you keep spare contacts at work? I wear Dailies, and I have a pair in my purse, two in my gym bag, I think I have some in my car, etc., etc., etc. I would be in deep doo doo without my contacts so I make sure I never go without.

You did look great this morning in your glasses, though.

Meredith,

The only the I'm cracking up over now is your fantastic humor! You looked great in your glasses too by the way. xx

I actually liked the glasses! Glad to know they were yours and not a style prop. Although, that is okay once in a while, too.

Those particular glasses make your face look wide.

The glasses looked G-R-E-A-T! Don't feel self-conscious about them for one moment.

I have veneers on my two front teeth. I had a swimming pool accident many years ago - it wasn't really that obvious but the older I got the more I wanted to have it fixed - so a few years back I "bit the bullet" and had it done. The filing down, while no great fun, is not that big of a deal and (if it makes you feel better) mine (knock on wood) have never fallen out.

If you get a chance, watch the Dennis the Menace movie with Walter Matthau - there's a cute scene with Dennis and Mr. Wilson's dentures.

Hi Meredith,
I didn't get to see Today this morning, so I missed out on the glasses. PLEASE post a pic of you (from this morning's show)...I've GOT to see what you look like!!
I'm sure you would look really scholarly with any pair of corrective glasses.
Also, best of luck with the 'neers...I am familiar with Lumineers because they advertise on shows like "Millionaire".

Bye for now,
Joe :)

Meredith,
The glasses worked no big deal there.
You guys seem to have so much fun vs when Katy was reigning.
I read Richard's book. Very good. I have muscular dystrophy and have a great wife/caregiver of 34 years.
We watch every day now that the new crew is on.
Happy Holidays

Meredith -
I can relate to missing your son, growing up. My son is in is 2nd year of college - he goes to school in our town - but lives near campus...I am still missing him like crazy...the empty nest SUCKS!!
And I LOVE your glasses - in fact what is the brand I want a pair!
You are awesome - I enjoy watching you and Matt daily!

I loved the glasses you wore this week on TODAY, though they remind me of those worn by my ex-girlfriend Donna Lewis, who lives in my apartment complex in Indianapolis and is now supposedly dating a loaded boyfriend from nearby Carmel.
I can't wait to see you this week on TODAY Extreme! I saw the promos of you skydiving with the cast--GOOD LUCK with that and your dental appointment! I hope I never need veneers myself!
Finally, I have requested that Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band appear on TODAY Show and have you perform with them--I even requested that The Reverend give you one of his resonator acoustic guitars! They will be at a New Year's Eve Party in Downtown Indianapolis this year if you are coming this way.
This leads me to the question: Why HAVEN'T you performed on TODAY? You would be as awesome as the musical guests who appear! Feliz Navidad y/et Joyeux Noel!

how can I receive an autographed 8 x 10 from you ???

good luck w/ your tooth !

Meredith, the glasses were awesome! Loved them. You looked terrific. I love how you keep yourself so real to the viewers - telling us about your cracked tooth, contact lenses, even shopping on black friday. I love turning on the Today Show in the morning, and you are one of the biggest reasons. Keep up the great work! You and Matt are a wonderful team.

Lauren said:

OK admit it...you left your contacts home on purpose so you could get some comments on the glasses.

Meredith, please don't become another Katie Couric, who began to think that the show was just a stage for her to model and show off her singing and dancing. She took it so far that her one time fans couldn't take it anymore.

Lisa said:

I loved you in the glasses. Gives us four-eyed girls someone to look up to! You rock!

Jordan said:

I loved the glasses!!!

Sarah said:

I thought the glasses looked great! I too need to use contacts and was happy to see you representing the four eyed ladies!

so that's the story behind the glasses. have to admit i was a bit surprised. think you look great :)

Martha in Kansas said:

I like the glasses. Recently I've started wearing mine full-time instead of contact, because at 55 they cover the under-eye bags. At 14, I couldn't wait to get rid of the glasses. The circle of life...

Meredith,

I normally do not comment on any show but I was a big fan of Katie's so I have to comment. I think you are a good person so please don't take this personally. I am 37 and work every day in a very tough profession so I enjoy my morning watching the today show. I watch for the woman anchor and since Katie has left I find that I only watch now due to habit and not for enjoyment. I support women in all professional fields and I use to always enjoy seeing what new style Katie would bring to us each morning and she is the main reason I watched the show.I beg for you to step it up a little and bring to us a great style. I am purely being superficial so you have to laugh a little.I know it's early but I am hoping you could start bringing new style's to us each morning and I can't help but think you can afford a stylist...please make an effort I know you can do better than what you have brought to us so far.I also ask that you please work on the time delay with the interviews you currently perform.

Meredith,

Glasses were okay, you just need to get some that work with your eyes, rather than seem to distort the natural shape. Your eyes talk!

Sending you energy on learning how to be part of the hello and gooodbye with Ben, rather than being more a part of home.

I had root canals done on all my front teeth after a car accident many years ago, the dentist told me my teeth would survive me. :-) He had all the tact of a pitbull. All done at one sitting, so I empathize with dental pain.

Sounds like your Thanksgiving was comparable with the ladies at the View, one slept, one had dinner with family from the funeral business, and one sat through the Godfather. :-) Glad to hear the normal side to all of you.

Happy Holidays!
Linda

Hi Meredith,
I know how you feel about getting veneers, I got the two front ones some years ago and when he was getting them ready I could feel the two points and got sick to my stomach. The dentist asked me if I wanted to take a look in the mirror, of course I said no way, I kind of know what I must have looked like and I didn't want to see it. One of them did break off once when I bit into something hard, I don't remember what it was but I got fixed right away and nothing has happend since that time.
I thought you looked very nice in your glasses but to tell the truth I like you better with your contacts.
It is good that Ben loves school, imagine how you would feel if he hated to go back?
I am watching you right now with Paula Dean and you look so nice in green, I think your eyes look greener.
Love ya Meredith

It's so refeshing to see you have so much fun with Ann, Matt and Al. Seems as if you all are so relaxed together. I see the biggest difference since you joined the show...we ALL feel relaxed watching you! Thank you for your vulnerability and authenticity. My husband teases about how I will not miss an opportunity to watch "Madiera Viera", which for some reason is his name for you.

I'm in love!! Keep the glasses!

I loved the glasses. I remember seeing them going, "I didn't know she wore glasses".

No worries... news is news... with or without spectacles! :)

I loved the glasses!! Also where did you get your boots (black high heels)!! I absolutely LOVED them!!!!!

Glasses? Oh yeah, the glasses were great. Of course, I was more impressed with the black boots and black dress. You always look wonderful.

Veneers -
Did you ever consider Lumineers? They are veneers, but in 95% of cases, they DO NOT need any prep, i.e. they bond right over your existing teeth. They look great too.

G'Day Meredith!
I caught the Today Show (Friday Nov 30) for the first time in ages. Because I live in Sydney Australia and it is shown the next morning, delayed broadcast from 4-6am, it's not normally my best waking hour! Having a bit of insomnia though, I was glad to catch up with you. Looking forward to seeing you more often when visiting my family in Delaware come Spring. You always look fabulous! Sharon

Merideth|: You have made that show so much fun to watch! You are just a natural.

Meredith--whenever I read your blogs about your son in college, and especially the one about saying "goodbye" each time, I cry!! My son is in his second year of college. We still get emotional saying goodbye...but then we remember that we're all much happier that he's in college and not hanging out on the couch at home. :)
