Miscellaneous musings
I’ve got a lot of random thoughts rattling around this old noggin’ this morning.
For one, I’m waiting to do a post-tape interview with Taylor Swift, who, at the age of 17, is already on her way to becoming a country music star. She has the third best-selling country record in America, after Carrie Underwood and Tim McGraw. Pretty impressive. People like Taylor always amaze me, having so much passion and direction (not to mention talent) at such a young age. When I was 17, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I was all over the map, which is maybe why I became a journalist in the end—because when you are a reporter you go from story to story—it’s like trying on different hats every day.
When I leave the studio today, I’m going to visit my assistant Amanda and her baby, Sophia—who is already almost a month old. The other day Amanda said she was worried she was "spoiling" the baby because Sophia never wants to be put down. I’m sorry, but I don’t think you can spoil a baby. How can you give a child too much love? My son Ben was just like Sophia—he’d cry whenever I’d put him down. So I pretty much carried him everywhere in one of those baby-slings. And he turned out okay. Of course he never wants me to hold him anymore (but then again, he is six feet tall and 18 years old).
And for those of you who pointed out after reading my blog yesterday that my mom couldn’t possibly have had a perm every week without her hair falling out--- I think you are right. I should have said that she went to the hairdresser every Friday to get her hair done. But that perm smell is what I remember so well when I think back to those beauty shop days.

Here’s a shot of the tree in Rockefeller Center. It’s looking kind of plain now, but in a matter of hours it’ll be glowing like Rudolph’s nose. The Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place tonight on NBC, starting at 7 p.m. EST. And our buddy Al Roker is hosting—so check it out.

Loved your red scarf today. Did you knit it? Saw in an article you were taking up knitting. Fun!
My mom still gets her hair done every week. I call it the small town Texas do. Where I am from.....it's called a "wet set." Yikes....I still don't know how she can go all week and not wash her hair. Oh well....glad it's her and not me.
The Rockefeller tree is so amazing. My husband and I were talking last night about how we would love to take our kiddos to New York during the holidays. I have been to New York he hasn't. I can only imagine how beautiful it is with all the lights, hubbub, and snow.
I agree with you about not being able to spoil a baby, at times they just get older and get us figured out so well, it seems to spoil our thinking that we have the control any longer. :-)
If Julianna from Dancing With the Stars goes to Nashville, Taylor and Carrie will be standing on the sideliines and watching you glow, I listen to country, but it has been a long time since I have heard a natural voice like Julianna stand alone without the music behind her, and leave you feeling in awe of what you are hearing.
Blesings,
Linda
We watched your interview today with Miss Puerto Rico and it seems that some "cultural" facts were ignored. For some unknown reasonable explanation, in Puerto Rico this beauty pageant is a real big deal. As a mater of fact, when a Puerto Rican wins Miss Universe, the next day is a national holiday! There have been 5 Puerto Rican's Miss Universe and we carry that with great pride, and the competition is fierced and followed with great interest by everyone in PR. Stories on the sabotage of the Misses are abound and are kept quiet, but we have known of other incidents prior to this one that has caught national attention. Nothing justifies whatever happened, but we have no doubt that it indeed happened... again this pageant is HUGE here
Meredith, do you come back to Rumford now and again? Pawtucket Ave? Wilson Ave? If you do, please consider taking part in the Rhode Island State Nurse Association's golf tournament next year.
P. S. My mom had her hair done every week in a "beauty shop" off of Warren Ave.!
Meredith! Saw you in the ZORB yesterday, loved how they had to bleep you out! I also loved how they had the ZORBs out on the Plaza- you kept saying, "wow I love this, how fun!" but every time they would cut to you, your face said the opposite! I love how you get out there and bring fun stuff to the table.
A thanks from me to you is in order. If it didn't make her O-C-D flare up too much, thank you for telling Martha to "eat it" while putting your ginger bread house on the cake anyway! I like Martha and her tips, but let's keep one thing straight: She is the guest, you are hostess (interview-wise)- if it were HER show I would have understood her behavior.
Well, I set my 11 month old son down to write this and he just isn't happy about it. I'm going to go "spoil" him! I agree with you there as well!
I love the Today show!
I loved the segment on the young country singer today!
Hi Meredith
Thanks for posting that cool pic of you wearing glasses the other day. Yes, you look quite scholarly wearing glasses. :)
Joe
Meredith,
I hope this is where we can ask questions for Friday! What's your workout routine (weights, cardio?) and when do you find time to fit it in? Do you have a workout buddy? By the way, you look great! Keep it up!
I agree with you - you can't spoil a baby by holding it. However, I do think it's a good idea to put a baby down for a nap while he/she is still awake. This teaches them to calm themselves and get to sleep without rocking, etc. They may fuss a little bit while learning this important skill.
I enjoy hearing about your reaction to your son going off to college. My oldest is a junior and I'm already dreading the day he will move on to college...yet I want him to have that great experience!
Christi, there is absolutely no place on Earth like New York during the holidays. Go, by all means. But be warned: it ain't small-town Texas expensive; it's seriously big-city expensive.
Hi Meredith.
I am portuguese and from Connecticut. It's not often that you hear that a successful reporter/celebrity's (like yourself)nationality is portuguese. I was born in the US and my parents imigrated to the US from Portugal 40 years ago. I live in a community where there's a big portugese community. We have an awesome portuguese restaurant and bakery's in our area. You should come to Connecticut some time.
Love watching you ....and so happy you've found your "comfort zone" on the show. Absolutely LOVE your glasses... Have to agree with the male posters on here - very sexy! Please, please... share who makes the frames???? Thanks for making my mornings ~~~
Thanks Meredith for sticking up for the truth over the ineffectiveness of abstinence education. I know you are in a tough position but it is good when you shine the light of reality about how abstinence education doesn't delay sexual activity.
THE TREE IS AMAZING, IT GETS BETTER AND BETTER EVER YEAR. I AM FROM NY NOW LIVE IN FLA. I THE ONLY THING I MISS THE MOST IS NY AT CHRISTMAS TIME.
I HAVE A QUESTION, CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED TO CAMBELL BROWN I DO NOT SEE HER ON THE SHOW ON SAT, OR SUN.ANY MORE.
THANK YOU AND HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY.
P.S. I LOVE SEEING YOU ON THE SHOW I THINK YOU BRING A LOT TO THE SHOW.

Hello Meredith,
I have random questions! Can you share your opinions about how you feel about certain people that you interview?...I'm thinking primarily of Drew Peterson. He is so slimy and sick, it turns my stomach to see his face and hear his voice. I wonder what kind of an attorney would even represent him.
Another random thought: please explain how the makeup and dressing crew get all of you into those amazing Halloween costumes so fast?
I live in the Kansas City area which every year brags about their Mayor's Christmas Tree, the tallest in the country at 100 feet. Well, it is tall and skinny, looks more like a barber's pole than a Christmas tree. The Rockefeller Center tree is way more beautiful and 86 feet seems plenty tall! I wish Kansas City would look for beauty in a tree, rather than "the tallest!" Tell me, why should I even care..I'm Jewish!
Question for you, Meredith. Are you returning to Millionaire? When will you be on for 3 hours on the Today Show?
I am amazed at watching you and how busy your day must be. I'm an at-home mom and bipolar. I can't imagine your schedule let alone my schedule 7 years ago before being diagnosed.
It was so great seeing you at Radio City and being part of your "audience" for the Radio City Special on Dec. 1!! That was one of my "good" days. But my husband was surprised that I didn't run to get an autograph so he did it for me. Good and bad comes so frequently for me.
Keep up the GREAT work.

As a retired homicide investigator,I have been accused of being cynical and hardened. However, moments ago I viewed your interview with the family of Riley Sawyer. I too was moved to tears and my heart goes out to them as well as that precious little girl. I realize this has nothing to with your blog but thought it the best way to let you know that I enjoy your work on the show. I believe that you strive to give an honest opinion and react in kind to situations honestly. I have always enjoyed watching you on both "The View" and "The Today Show".
I love reading your musings! I don't like quoting people without their knowledge, so I thought I would let you know that I used a sentence from your Good Housekeeping interview published in the November '07 issue (my mother handed the magazine to me earlier this week).
my entry, in my blog about life with disabilities at our area newspaper, is at http://extra.chronicle-tribune.com/blogs/invisibleissues/2007/11/about_resilience.html. As a mother who is dealing with MS (and who has a very patient, loving husband!), so much of your interview really spoke to us. I love seeing you on The Today Show (though I only have the chance to see it 2 or so mornings per week) - thank you for the heart and smile you share each morning!
~Angie
It always brightens my day when I click on Meredith Today and see that there is a new blog. Even when it's just a few random thoughts like today I enjoy it. Thanks for taking the time.
The comments Meredith made this morning about Matt turning 50...hysterical! I laughed so hard! Thanks for brightening my day! Happy Holidays!
