Friday Q&A: Hats, Christmas songs & Portugal!
Meredith tackles more of your questions! Asks yours today, and check back next Friday for the answer. Maybe she'll choose yours!
DECEMBER 14, 2007
hello Meredith my name is Kyle Clark I am a very big fan of yours from Swansea, IL and I was wondering if you wear Hats? and if so if you could do a today show with a Hat on?
Posted by Kyle Clark on December 07 at 10:26pm
I like hats, actually. The problem with wearing a hat on the show is that every time you go back inside, you have to have your hair fixed all over again. And there’s never enough time. I like berets, and I also like those Irish caps, and the British bollers--those rounded ‘top hats. But I look particularly fetching in a dunce cap…
Hi Meredith,
Thanks for answering my question about "Millionaire".
Here's another question:
What are your favorite Christmas songs and who sings some of your favorites (Bing, Frank, Tony B., Johnny M., Eartha Kitt, etc.)?
Joe :)
Posted by Joe on December 07 at 07:13pm
I’m not big on "favorites"—I love almost every Christmas song there is. But I am partial to Johnny Mathis, particularly "Winter Wonderland", "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year".
I was wondering how close you are to your Portuguese/Azorean roots. Do you speak Portuguese? Have you ever been to Portugal or the islands? We're planning a trip to Portugal and maybe the Azores this summer and was wondering if you had any advice for a first-timer at a topless beach?
Posted by Dee on December 13 at 09:07am
I never learned Portuguese growing up, even though my parents spoke it fluently. My father was a family doctor and a huge percentage of his patients were immigrants from the Azores. One of the many reasons I admired my Dad is because he treated people without any concern as to their ability to pay. Often I’d go home and there’d be some stranger mowing our lawn, or a loaf of sweet bread on the porch, or a bottle of home-made port on the kitchen table. These are proud people who paid my Dad in the only way they could. I was so busy growing up and just wanting to "fit in" that I was part of that generation that saw myself as solely American. Now I wish I had learned the language. I did go to Portugal in 1972, the summer after my freshman year in college, and I was blown away by how beautiful it is. I’ve never been to the Azores but I can tell you that Lisbon, Estoril, and the Algarve are all worth visiting. Some of the old hunting lodges are also really cool. And make sure at some time during your visit you get grilled sardines. As far as topless beaches, I didn’t see any when I was there.
Feel free to post a question of your own for next time!

Hi Meredith, Im from a small town in Minnesota and watch your show every day! I get up extra early before schoolso I have enough time to get ready and then watch the show. I have a question, I noticed that you wear a charm bracelet everday, (the gold one with the dangley) I was wondering what that symbolized? Anything special? Your such a great person!
I enjoy hearing about your wonderful family. But, can you tell us about Lenny and the white haired gentleman that is often in the crowd with him?
Have a great holiday.
Just wondering, what do like doing in your free time?
Thanks,
Jolene

I think NBC was on the ball when they replaced Katie Couric with Meredith She is a delight and real. She also speaks with a lilt in her voice and a twinkle in her eye - a very REAL person. Meredith, what took them so long?

I watch the show every day. I used to watch the CBS morning show but am now happily watching Meredith on "Today" and Brian Williams on the Evening News.
Meredith,
When do you have the time to do your Christmas shopping and gift wrapping? Do you stay in "town" after the show and shop? I am so fascinated how you can juggle everything.
What are the chances of you and Matt doing the third hour of the Today show? As much as I loved you on the View, I wasn't sure you would work out on Today. You are much more relaxed now and I feel like you've been there forever, and that's a good thing. Would enjoy seeing more of you.
When I was quite young (6 years old) I went with my family to Portugal as I have relatives there. They live in Estoril. When I was older and spent my junior year abroad (in Denmark) I traveled to Portugal to visit with my relatives there again. They showed me around and one of the most memorable places I have ever been is the castle in Lisbon. It is way atop a hill and covered in the most beautiful glazed tiles; all differnt colors and patterns. I had never seen anything like it, and still haven't. It is very clear in my meomory as one of the most beautiful places ever.
Hi Meredith,
Count me among your many Today Show and Blog fans. Here's my question for a possible future Friday:
What would be your idea of a perfect day?
Thanks for all you do!
Question for Friday: from Westport, MA...do you know if Ann Curry is the voice of some commercials? Boniva being one. I can't figure it out. Is she as lovely as she seems in person? A genuine person?
Hi Meredith,
I have a question. I'm reading Jody Picoult's novel, Nineteen Minutes. I don't know if you've heard of it, or read it, but it is a fantastic book. At some point in the novel, they reference you as a newscaster - do they have to ask for your permission to use your name?
Hi Meredith...
I'd love to have an autographed 8 x 10 from you. How can I get one ? , Where can I send away for one ?
Thank you !
Hi Meredith, Being from Rhode Island, I wondered if you're familiar with the quahog shell and the lovely wampum jewelry made from it? Thanks!
Hi Meredith,
Where do you go for Christmas? Are Gabe and Lily done with school yet? Love you on the show. Happy Holidays to you Richard and the kids.

Meredith- the guy at the New Orleans fracas wasn't yelling "Don't TEASE me", he was yelling "Don't TASE me" . . He didn't want to get tazered.
Meredith,
I am a college student and I am interested in doing internships throughout my college career. I understand that The Today Show/NBC offers internships throughout the year. How difficult is it to get one of these internships, and what do you guys look for? Do you have any say in the process?
Can you help me and tell me how Al Roker was on the today show on New Years day, and then 2 hours later he was in Pasadina hosting the New Years day parade. Please help me solve my problem.
Tonya from Virgina
Meridith--read your hubbys first going right ou to buy hi most recent keep up the good work on your two shows
hey meredith! i have time to watch you and matt every morning before i go to school. you two are so genuine and real, a great way to start the day. i just discovered your blog today so i don't know if you have been asked this yet, but what is the funniest thing that has happened to you and matt on the show?
Is Vioxx an example of "chronic" ignorance? You know, ma'am? There actually are people who monitor with love as the soul cause . . . and NOT the cash. Is that a chronic problem to spend one's time keeping Pinocchio (sp?) out of trouble? You know? . . . heart-strings can be just a little bit of a nuisance.
Hi Meredith,, I am an aspiring news anchor and my biggest dream is to be on The Today Show, you, Natalie and Ann are my idols! I wanted to ask if you had any advice for me for how to really make yourself stand out in the competitive world of news media. I know one thing for sure and that is you're a great daily teacher for me to watch and learn from. Thanks!
hi meredith, thanks for coming to the today show. you're at buckingham palace right now, and lucky you! how exciting it must be to have your job.
thanks to you and the rest for such an interesting show.
i would like to add that i don't like watching any celebrity news, whether good or bad.
i don't go to the movies, i don't buy/rent any movies, i just go to the library and scan the shelves for something interesting. celebrities aren't all that to me, i don't understand the overwhelming interest others have in them, and they can be replaced as easily as a wardrobe.
and a very inexpensive one too. they just aren't worth their money to me. and the coverage on that actor recently, keith ledger, is going a bit overboard. actors are moody people any way. add a mix of prescription drugs and these kinds of incidents will happen all the time. look at anna nicole, drugged to the point of death by so called friends. come on, it's obvious that wasn't accidental. i worry about her baby now. is she really safe...?
HI Meredith...It is so very true about your wonderful father! I know first hand, because I grew up in East Procidence. As a matter of fact on Arlington St. and your father's Doctor's Office was on the corner of Warren Ave. and Arlington St. When I was very young(about two I guess) I got a very bad cut on my foot and my Mom and Dad rushed me to his office. He stopped everything he was doing and treated and stitched up my wound(which I still have a scar of to this day,I am 56 years old)
And ,as my Mom tells me, worked out a payment for them for his services. He was an angel to the people at the time! He was an "old time" doctor who would make house visits/calls when you were to ill to make it to his office and would really treat you WELL right in your own home bringing his doctor "bag" wit him. Or you could walk in to his office and not have to make an appointment! The old time waiting room at the doactor's office! I miss when doctors were like that!
He would always say Hi to us kids hanging around the drug store/soda fountain across the street. I have very fond memories of the Man that was your Dad! And as I am living in Florida now..I miss Portuguesse food..ahhhh...sweet bread from the Town Sweet Shop..also across the street from your father's office! And the wonderful aroma's of all the different Portuguesse cooking coming out of every house walking home down Arlington St....It would make your mouth water as you were walking home to eat!
And I know how you became you...with parents such as you had it is no surprise!
