Friday Q&A: Manny, blogging, Sesame Street and mouthguards
Meredith tackles more of your questions! Ask yours today, and check back next Friday for the answer. Maybe she'll choose yours!
JANUARY 4, 2008
I have been wondering what ever happened to Manny, the gray haired man that was always seen with Lenny when you pan the spectators.
Posted by Pat on December 21 at 11:42pm
I’m so sorry to say that Manny passed away last year, shortly before the holidays. He always greeted us with a warm smile and a hearty hello. We miss him on the plaza. He was as much a part of the Today show family as any one of us.
Hey Meredith! Love you on Today! My sister and I took a trip to New York a couple of years ago, best time ever! Not that we don't love our families, but there's something to be said about leaving the kids and husbands at home! I've tried to get into blogging, but get stuck. Do you enjoy it, and do you have any tips to get started?

Let me tell you the history of this blog: when I started it, I didn’t even know what the word meant. The folks at NBC asked me to blog because they thought it was a great way for the audience to get to know the "real" me. But it’s not always easy to share personal stories, especially when they involve family members who may not want the attention. So I have to be very careful. Having said that, what I love about the blog is that it forces me to stop in my day and reflect. I guess I’m the sort of person that would never do so otherwise. Sometimes I’ll sit for an hour or more, racking my brains for something to say. But I’ve learned that it’s often the simplest stories that are the most relatable. At its best, blogging provides a real sense of community.
Hey Meredith
Did you know that you have been referenced on Sesame Street? I saw the episode this morning with Anderson Cooper. He was interviewing grouch correspondents "Dan Rathernot" and "Walter Cranky". At the end of the segment, Oscar said to tune in tomorrow to see "Meredith Beware-a" and "Diane Spoilah". It was cute. Just wondered if you had seen it.

I haven’t seen that episode of Sesame Street, but I will tell you that I love the show.
question...why a mouthguard after waking and especially while drinking coffee??
Happy New Year from RI!
Posted by Geoff on January 02 at 02:25pm
Although I was given a mouthguard, I was joking when I said I kept it in place while drinking my coffee on Christmas morning…you must think I’m kookier than I really am, Geoff. Happy New Year to you and all the folks in RI. I still miss Del's lemonade.
Feel free to post a question of your own for next time!

Hi Meredith,
I enjoy watching you on The Today Show and Millionaire. The View hasn't been the same since (as good) since you left.
Anyway, do you have an opinion about this: I feel really annoyed when I hear the press refer to Barack Obama as possibly the first black President. First of all, why can't Obama just be successful on his own merits as a human being...and secondly, he isn't black. He is bi-racial. His mother is as white as you or me. This same inaccuaracy came into play when Halle Berry won her Oscar. She is also bi-racial, has a white mother, too. So, why can't actors, polititians, and the rest of us who succeed or make news headlines just be a part of the HUMAN race in general? What do you think?
Do you read ALL the comments you receive?
Thanks!
hey meredith! i have time to watch you and matt every morning before i go to school. you two are so genuine and real, a great way to start the day. i just discovered your blog today so i don't know if you have been asked this yet, but what is the funniest thing that has happened to you and matt on the show?
Meredith. I've been a fan of yours for years. How do you deal with the heartache (heartbreak?) of watching a loved one suffer, deteriorate, etc. I am going through this now with my husband and I don't know how one gets through it day to day.
Meredith,
I am not sure what blogging is, in a correct form. I just put out there what comes through my head, and let it go!

Here is the one that I update the most frequently.
Blessings,

Where did you get those beautiful white gold hoop earrings? I would like to have a pair!
Good-bye Today Show-Today I got tired of looking at blue men and Britany. I have changed to GMA to get a hostess eith some class. Your Saturday hostess is much better than Meredith and You let the best get away. Campbell Brown. Maybe someday I can return as I always watch NBC.

hey!
when the cameras pan back to go to commercial and you're moving papers around on the table, are you actually doing something or just looking busy until the camera's off? when there are a few of you and the mics go off, what do you chat about? just wondering :)
Good Morning, I appreciate that a news organization is dedicated to the news but sometimes there are stories that are
better served to be left alone. The Spears sisters need to be left alone, I have young teenagers at home and I believe that no news is good news regarding these two. Stories about Dr. Phil are self serving to only him. There are so many really news worthy items around the world. Please help parents around the world and inform us about other stories that can help us with the growth of our families.
I truly am very faithful to the Today Show and have seen it's growth and improvement. It is a human show, you can feel the caring.
I am an ex pat living in Guatemala and I love to wake up to the Today Show. It gives me a piece of the US. There is so much great of the States to share, not only the natural beauty but the beauty of its people. Promote the inteligence of young America, not the emptiness of Hollywood.
Sincerely,
Patricia Sinibaldi
I agree with the comments above, stop reporting about the Spear sisters. This is not a news story it is just a sad story for a family. Leave it alone. I too will not be watch the show if you continue to report on non-news stories.
Why is Al so nasty to Meridith? It's annoying to hear him insult her on every little blip. He contributes so little to the show; how about being nice. Loose the blue man stories.
Meridith - We love you on TODAY. The change in the show's atmosphere since you have joined has a joy to watch. Everyone seems more relaxed and personable.
I'm just a little curious, though - you used to be so colorful in your wardrobe. Now, what's with all the black?
Meredith - what response do you have to those naysayers who tell me I'm nuts for believing it's actually YOU writing this blog? I've been a constant reader and am constantly told you have an assistant or ghost writer blogging for you - not true, I say!!!!....right?...
HI Meredith,
A comment for Anne, I don't think anyone cares if you aren't going to be watching Today if they don't stop talking about the "Spears Sisters", maybe by letting other kids know that being a star doesn't excuse you for acting like fools and what can happen if you don't act responsible. Bye Bye Anne
Meredith, I was moved today when you were talking about Richard's book and had a segment on 2 people who are living with chronic illness, I know what it is like but I do feel lucky that I did find a good doctor. I ordered Richard's new book last Friday and can't wait to get it.
Love ya Meredith

I'm curious, is this supposed to be a daily blog Monday through Friday or just when Meredith "gets around to it"? If it is supposed to be daily then it is a great disservice to the blog followers on how often it is actually updated.
This is a real blog and the proof is in the pudding when she answered my question last Friday and also mentioned Del's Lemonade, a RI Specialty, only a Rhode Islander would know!
Meredith, keep up the good work, I have followed you from WJAR here in PVD.
I must agree with some folk though that Britney news is overbearing, not only on NBC but all media outlets but I understand with ratings and all it has to be covered as all the others are chasing the story.
Have a great evening!
Geoff
Hi Meredith,
Happy New Year!
Please tell your husband Richard congratulations on his new book, and I commend his incredible strength for getting through his project (as you described in your earlier blog). I hope to write my first book on sensory processing disorders someday soon.
Here's some good questions for you:
You said that you own a Honda minivan and a Lexus SUV. Did you and Richard decide on both?
Since you have an allergy to metal, what kind of earrings and bracelets (including your "lucky charms") can you wear?
Here's an age-old question: Do you say "soda" or "pop"?
Have a good one!
Joe :)
Meredith i want to tell you that I love
the show. I believe that "sense of humor" plays a big part of the shows popularity. All of you have a great sense of humor. When you guys and gals laugh and joke around it is a breath of fresh air from "reality".
I must say that I agree with the above comments. Loose the Blue Man stories and Please give us a break from the Spears Family problems. And no more Brad and Angie. Enough already!! I would love to see Vincent Donofrio on the show. He is such a talent. A real Family man too. Also,Any of the Law and Order.guys and gals. Now they are, in my humble opinion, "ROLL MODELS".
Have to take issue with the poster who said that tabloid topics have to be covered for the sake of ratings.
That's like saying that as adults we're going to serve alcohol to teenagers in order to be popular.
When did the tabloids begin to occupy the driver's seat? And why are so called journalists enjoying the ride? They are actually gleeful while engaging in the banter, oblivious to what their behavior is doing to their reputations.
There's a sanctimonious aspect to the way reporters deliver the news of drug and alcohol tragedies, yet they are clearly more mindful of providing salacious details than of the fact that these details are the tragic facts of families affected by them.
Broadcasters are so preoccupied with delivering their next irreverent line that they speak of death with smiles on their faces.
What has happened to the profession of journalism? It is no longer staffed with professionals.
Response to Amanda:
I'm listening to Meredith & her husband on the Leonard Lopate Show as I'm typing this right now. They're discussing chronic illness and it's very moving. So she obviously has a very busy schedule that sometimes has to take precedence over this blog. It is not always about us when she misses the blog.
Ditto what Stephanie said about regularity of the bloggings.
I have a question Meredith: I understand you started your career at WORC in Worcester, MA correct? What do you remember about that experience, good and bad? I was borned and raised there.
Hi Meredith,
I have a really GOOD question:
I'm wondering if it may be possible for me to download the AUTHENTIC "Millionaire" templates? These, of course, appear exactly as they do on the TV show, including the exact same fonts (letters, numbers, etc.) that make up the question and answer choices.
I DO have ALL of the music and sound effect elements from the show downloaded onto a CD-ROM.
The reason I am asking is because I am creating a computer-controlled "Millionaire Simulator".
You may want to ask your colleagues at "Millionaire" about this.
Thanks,
Joe :)
Meredith, your always bubbly and have a beautiful smile each time I see you. I lost my 28 year old daughter to the same disease your husband has. What keeps you going? I always put on a happy front for my daughter but it was so hard. Watching you always made me feel stronger dealing with her illness.
To all of you who aren't satisfied with how Meredith does her blog, go away, it is up to her and how much time she has if she is going to be able to blog so if it bothers you so much then don't come here. It is so annoying to me to read the petty complaining, I bet it doesn't bother Meredith though and it shouldn't.
Meredith, I appreciate every time I see something from you on your blog and for the days that you don't have time to blog it isn't going to ruin my day either.
Love ya Meredith, whatever you do.

For all you crabby people out there, give Meredith a break. You have no idea how easy she makes it look until you've seen her LIVE! And I'd like to see you step in and do her job with such grace.
No matter what's thrown at her, she always comes through with flying colors,
whether she likes it or not.
As much as I admire Rosie and Whoppi, they
always made/make a big deal out of the fact that they're the one's in charge. So was Meredith, but she always made it look like she was just one of the girls.
So if you don't like the content of The Today Show, write to the executive producers, not her. They're the one's in charge, and lucky to have her as their shining star!!!
Hi Meredith! Been an admirer of yours going back to 60 Minutes. I'm just glad I "was at" the Today Show long before you decided to come on board. It's like the best of both worlds now!
I have a question about Today's guest interviewers. How is that decided on a daily basis? Is it simply a match of "eeny meeny miney moe" or do you have some input on it? I'm just wondering because of the preparation & research you do (or is given to you) prior to an interview. Thanks for the blog! It's a must-read in my hidden vice of blog addictions.
Hi Meredith!
Here's a question for you. What are your "normal" hours for work. I believe you go in around 5:30 a.m., but what time do you usually leave to go home? What time do you go to bed?
I'm sure you're thankful for Tivo! Ha Ha
Keep up the good work!
Dear Meredith,
Watching the news show on Jan 9th, the day of Hillary's comeback in NH, I have was thinking about the reasons for this amazing come back. Everybody is talking about her famous moment in the coffee shop when her emotions almost led to her tears, but to be honest I find that reasoning quite misogynous; I think what the media missed was her concern as she almost broke up, and it was her concern of what America was bracing for when opting to vote for inexperience, but she said it with real and honest worry and frustration, I think that was the moment everyone voting thought, 'hey wait this women might be right, we might be making a big mistake here'. I can't vote because I am not an American citizen (which I am sorry because I would have been out on the streets volunteering for the Dems) but if I were, and I was originally puhing for Obama, I would now definitively go and vote for Hillary, those words in that moment made a whole difference, not the tears. What do you think? Thanks.
I don't know if I should be glad or not that I agree with another poster in regards to Al's treatment of Meredith. I was hoping that I was being overly sensitive. Meredith is a welcome addition to the Today Show, and Al's constant "digs" to Meredith are unprofessional, unkind, and unwelcome to this viewer. It's a morning show for goodness sake; start the day off positively. Meredith, kudos to you for handling it all so well.
Hi Mededith,
Looking forward to reading your husbands new book...I love the title 'Strong At The broken Places'. How did he choose it? Thanks!
Hi Meredith,
I've just started reading Peter Jennings's biography. I know you worked as an abc news correspondent prior to working on the View. Did you have the pleasure of knowing or working with Peter Jennings or any other great anchor or correspondent at ABC News. Also What advice do you have for young teenagers like me aspiring to become journalists? You are the best.
Rachael
Hi, Meredith! Who is the black, mystery man in the plaza crowd EVERY DAY wearing dark glasses and a hat - today he had a bandage above his lip. He's always up on the fence and is usually standing right behind you all. He never waives to the camera - I can only assume he works for the show, security maybe. I just found it interesting to see him there without fail every day!
End the mystery for me, thanks!
- Meghan
What white Jacket were you wearing (with the whimsical hat) outside on the plaza on 1/14/08. It looked wonderful on you and I would like to purchase one for myself.
I have watched many of your interviews on the Today Show. Do you think it would be possible to be a true journalist and ask questions, without bias? It would be refreshing.
Greetings from Miami Florida,
I am actually from New Bedford Ma.( I have been living here for 20 something years now) although I do go often up north, I especially like 1st night in RI..anyway... I so adore your bracelet you where everyday, I love silver and do not not like the ones with the hearts..so if you can ever find the time to let me know where to purchase a bracelet similar to yours I would so appreciate it...
Thanks
Sue
