April Fools – Day 2

So I guess I tricked some of you with my April Fool’s blog yesterday when I wrote that today would be my "final" entry. Even my security guy Joe asked this morning if I was really going to quit the blog…

Well, not yet, though there was truth to the fact that I may not be able to keep this going on a daily basis given the crazy schedule that’s coming up—from Millionaire, to the Olympics, to the Conventions, and then, of course, the November Election. But I appreciate all your kind messages and will try my best to blog when I can.

[And by the way, for those who thought I really had inadvertently left out the last line of yesterday’s blog—then, ha ha--you were fooled twice—as that was all part of the joke. Thanks for being such good sports.]

Speaking of fooling around…I finally pulled one over on Matt Lauer this morning. But not until after he got me first. When I arrived at my dressing room at 5am, the door to the room was closed. I said to Joe, “That’s odd. Donna [our wardrobe mistress] always opens up the room for me.” So I walked in, and suddenly Matt jumped out of the bathroom and lunged at me while screaming. He really scared me silly. By that point he was laughing hysterically as he left for his dressing room, which is next door to mine.

Well, the gauntlet had been thrown down. I called Donna and said ‘Do you have any Vaseline?’ She didn’t, so I went into the kitchen in our satellite studio and grabbed a bottle of olive oil and some paper towels. At this point Matt was behind closed doors in his dressing room. I crept up to the door and drenched the outside knob with the oil. Then I slinked back to my dressing room. And waited.

It didn’t take long. I heard Matt’s door open, and he emerged to retrieve something from the printer which sits outside our dressing rooms. He poked his head into my room just long enough to gloat over surprising me earlier. And then he walked back to his room and reached for the knob…

By then I was standing in my doorway so I could soak in the moment. As his hand hit the oil, he shuddered in confusion and then immediately recoiled. At that point I burst out laughing, and then quickly tried to lock my door as he lunged at me with that greasy paw. I had to wedge my foot against the door to keep him out.

All I can say is I had a great laugh. And now I’m scared. Really scared.

Even though I know you'll be very busy, blogs from the Olympics would be wonderful. I also seem to remember you saying that you were going to take your family along when you went to China to cover the Olympics. Perhaps you could let the kids write your blog. It certainly would give us all a very interesting perspective and I would hope that it would be exciting for them, as well.

Give it some thought.

And also, congratulations on punking Matt.

As for your blogging it does sound like your schedule is going to be hectic, but we will survive with an ocassional blog. Not that we don't love hearing from you daily, but whenever you can is just as good. Keep up the great job!

I have to say you got us good. Glad you are still with us..keep up the good job and watch out for Matt!!!

He strikes me as a get-you-backer. Good luck, but I bet it was worth it for the delicious euphoria of pulling one over on him.

Glad you aren't really closing up shop!

Meredith,

You ROCK. We appreciate your blog... even if it can't be everyday. Can you ask Natalie to restart her blog? It would be nice to hear the perspective of a working Mom with a young child and new baby on the way. Women need all the role models they can get. Thanks for being one of them.

Well Meredith---I guess the laughs on me. You really got me good. When I was reading your blog yesterday, I didn't even think about it being April Fool's Day. HA! HA!

I got a good laugh today when I read about you & Matt clowning around with each other.

Just keep on blogging when you can--I'll be reading.

Hi Meredith.
I was soooo sadddened to read that you were leaving the blog yesterday. Then I read today that it was an April Fool's joke. I was elated. I have enjoyed watching and hearing about your family for many years on The View. When you got the Today Show gig. I enjoyed the blog with it's bits and pieces of your family every now and then. When I read you would not be blogging I felt a great loss I almost cried. Isn't that strange? I was sad I wouldn't hear about Gabe and Lily someday going off to college and all the in between family life that I have grown to enjoy. What a wonderful parent you seem to be. It was like reading a great novel and finding out the last few chapters were missing. Anyway Thank you so much for staying and sharing your life with us. I for one will be tuned in to read.

Meredith,

When does your new taping schedule for Millionaire begin? When will the new viewing season begin? I enjoy that show as much as Today because I only get to watch about the first 30 minutes of Today.

Dear Meredith,

I think your blog is a great idea and I can imagine that it might be hard writing something everyday... especially when your busy and traveling. It definitely makes me laugh and I wonder if you have the time to check the responses....?
I love the today show and I think you all are doing such a great job!
Thanks for all you do!
