Friday Q&As: Today alumni, handling bad days, career advice

April 4, 2008

Meredith tackles more of your questions! Ask yours today, and check back next Friday for the answer. Maybe she'll choose yours!

Keith said: Hi Meredith, I know you have worked with Hugh Downs and Barbara Walters at ABC, but is there anyone of the "Today" alumni that you would have liked to have worked with ?

I actually never worked with Hugh Downs although I would have loved to, along with Dave Garroway, Joe Garagiola, and that monkey J. Fred Muggs.

Mary said: Hi Meredith, I often wonder how you (and others in your industry) seem happy, content, and pleasant every single morning on television. Don't you have bad days sometimes (you've had an argument with your husband, something is on your mind, you didn't sleep well etc.) when you just don't feel like talking or being in front of such a huge audience? If so, how do you handle this so that no one has any idea you aren't in a "tip top" mood? Thanks for answering! You are great!

It’s the performance part of what I do. Even when I’m not feeling my best as soon as the red light on the camera goes on I kick into gear. In the doing, it’s always exciting. Plus the folks who do hair, makeup, and wardrobe always make you look good even when you don’t feel the part..

Meghan C. said: Hi Meredith! I was just at Today for my 18th birthday and I hope to pursue a career in communications after college so it was a wonderful experience to meet you when you came around to everyone and were amazingly genuine. What do you believe is the most essential personality characteristic for a journalist to possess? Thank you.

A natural curiosity and the ability to listen. So often reporters are so busy looking down at the next question on their pad that they don’t hear what the person they are interviewing is saying. I found the best interviews are the ones that take on a life of their own.

Feel free to post a question of your own for next time!

Here's my question for next week!!

I know you get a ton of comments sometimes. Do you ever go back to the websites/blogs of the people who read your blog?? I always love going to check out the blog of someone who comments on mine but I didn't know you ever did that or even had time to do that...

Thanks!!! Am STILL glad you're not ending your blog.. I'll take sporadic posts over no posts!!!

Thank you so much for answering my question, Meredith. I appreciate you taking the time to blog for us and answer questions. I will take your advice to heart, especially when I attend Quinnipiac in the fall, studying broadcast journalism. Thanks!

I am very curious as to why you are adding Kathy Lee Gifford to your Today Show line up. It seems so many channels are making changes these days, some for the positive, and some not so positive. Unfortunately for the Today Show I think they are about to make the biggest mistake yet. I know that I'll be turning into a new station after being a loyal fan for many years.

The mother who allowed her 9 year old to take the subway alone appeared to be reveling in her 15 minutes of fame (at the expense of her son).

As many have acknowledged, kids aren't as safe as they once were. That, in itself, is an issue worth researching.

WHEN did childhood become endangered?
WHY are kids considered fair game as victims NOW?
WHAT has CHANGED since the time it WAS safe for them to walk alone?
WHO has pushed the behavioral boundaries beyond what is safe?
HOW can each of us make childhood a better place to be?

Hi Meredith, I was wondering, if you could interview (or have as a contestant on Millionaire) any person in the world (living or dead) who would you pick

PS: Thanks again for answering my question in your blog entry a while back

Meredith,

I truly enjoy your show and the upbeat personality and energy that you bring to the show. I get distracted (probably a better word but I can't think of it) when I see you in an outfit with your strap sticking out and the outfit doesn't look professional. Your clothing did make a great change lately toward an updated professional look but it looks like spring came and that look was forfeited for one of the "Sunday School" look again. Are you sure that is what is best for you....the weather reporters here near Pittsburgh dress more professionally??!!

I hope my input is helpful to help with you being taken more seriously that getting reduced to the 'cute blond.

Meredith, with all this talk on the show about the next Today wedding, I've noticed a lack of any footage of Jessica and Cody who got married in October. My question is, is that a coincidence or is there a reason? I never remember hearing the promised follow-up story about their honeymoon either, did I miss that or did it not happen?

Thanks!

Hey Meredith, I'm 20 from Singapore and have been watching TODAY on my ipod eversince i got it. It's a great show! I've always wanted to be a journalist so I try to listen/watch/read news from all over - for both the stories and how news is broadcast from country to country. And I love the familiar, informal feel to TODAY! Wonder if it'd be possible for a foreign person like me to do an internship with NBC? I've done one with Channel NewsAsia, the local news network, but it'd be great to do one overseas!

Can a foreign person like me apply as an intern for TODAY?

I interned at Channel NewsAsia, our regional news network, and would love to intern at TODAY! I guess the visa applications and all would make the process complicated, but I'm really keeping my fingers crossed! =)

Meredith, Is this true ? :

I read someplace that the talent (you, Matt, Ann, Al, Natalie, Gene and all the rest) not allowed to say "yesterday" during the "Today" program.
Example "Yesterday, I interviewed Tom Cruise".
rather "Tuesday, I interviewed Tom Cruise".

Have you heard this ?

Meredeth, I appreciate your stories lately on the poor girl who was beaten and video taped in Florida. However, I feel that the news should stress that one of the mothers of the attackers feels that the girl "deserved it"..... There is one tape of an interview out on the internet saying that she felt that she needed to "take care of herself" if she was going to post that stuff on her internet sight. That mother should also be prosectuted in some way. To say the victim deserved it is TOTALLY wrong. You're telling us the stories and I appreciate it but also mention that that mother is a bad mother to feel that the victim "deserved" to be punished. Thank you,

I understand there is a morning program on an Australian
channel called "Today" .

Can they get in trouble by NBC ? I thought "Today" was
a trademark of some sort (of NBC).
