Have A Nice Day

If you really listened to today's show, you are probably wrapped in the fetal position right now.

The first story out of the box was the terrible weather in the midwest--from tornadoes to snow storms. Snowstorms? It's the middle of April...

Following that we had the story of American Airlines grounding yet another 900 planes to check for possible safety violations, and then right after that came the story of the polygamist compound in Texas being investigated for suspected child abuse.

And speaking of abuse, I won’t soon forget the image of high school students in Baltimore beating up their teacher, all of it captured by some student's cell phone camera. And if that wasn't enough, we learned that seniors in nursing homes are at risk of being sexually attacked by other residents with criminal records.

By now if you think that the world has gone to the dogs, well, they're not doing so well either. It turns out there has been an uptick in dog-napping, particularly pure breeds that are sold on the black market.

When the broadcast was over it was all I could do to drag myself out of there. I thought, "At least it's a beautiful day here in New York, maybe I'll go for a run and clear my head." But as I went to fill my plastic water bottle, I suddenly remembered yet another news item of the day—how plastic bottles can leech dangerous chemicals.

Talk about wanting to run…as far away from this day as I could.

Well, TGI-almost-F.

This was a great blog Meredith! Too funny! I was wondering if you would blog about those teenage girls! When I saw that video clip i was first in shock of the abuse and then in shock about how STUPID these girls were to VIDEO the beating! I mean man what does it say about our teens (and I'm only 23) if they are stupid enough to video something that would put them in jail! I can't even imagine hitting someone like.. it's sad to see girls with so much rage and hatred running through them. They need psychological help not just to be put in prison!

Meredith,
It is hard to watch the clip of the one girl being beaten by the group of girls.
It is hard to think about the vicious words being posted about kids on the Internet.

Dr. Keith Ablow's explanation for the escalation of this behavior is that these kids value fame above all else and they see U Tube as a quick vehicle to being famous. These kids have learned that "shocking" is the name of the fame game and react accordingly. In order to be noted, the behavior has to grow increasingly shocking, so where are we headed?

For that matter, where are the role models of these kids headed? The people kids see on television engage in the same game of escalating shocking behavior in order to maintain their claim to fame.....and these people are adults.

Wow - you're so right on with this one (as usual). Sometimes after a long day, I just have to turn off the news because there are so many depressing stories in the world. I think most of us feel bad for these people but don't think it affects us, I think it MUST on the inside, don't you? The thought of bringing a child in to this world is scary as heck even though that's what we're trying to do. I have to hand it to the Today show though, more often than not, I see stories to make us smile and laugh and lighten up the mood a little bit.

This was a great blog about today---thanks for reminding me!! :( That's why alot of the time I don't like to watch the nightly news; there's never much good going on. I'd like to run away sometimes too.

I do watch you, Ann, Hoda, etc....

You ladies are GREAT!!!!

It must be the moon! I, like you, have had one of those weeks too! I told my husband that I wanted the world to stop so that I could jump off! Ugh! Oh well, it's almost the weekend and I can stay hidden under my blankets a little bit longer tomorrow morning! Have a great weekend everyone!

Hi Meredith,

I was wondering, with all these airlines cancelling flights, HOW DO WE MAKE THEM PAY FOR THIS!? How do THEY hurt from all of this? It seems that the passengers just have to go along with them cancelling the flights and nothing really hurts them after the day they cancel the flights. CAn your team do a report on how we can "punish" the airlines for putting our safety at risk and making them feel more pain? I'm sorry but they need to be COMPLETELY reprimanded for this.

Thanks.

The news has been bleak of late, but it makes me all the more grateful for the smiling toddlers at my feet, the fluttery kicks in my belly from the feet I'll be kissing in a few short weeks and the beauty of a juicy burger. Poetry be damned, let's barbecue (can you say pregnancy craving?)

I just watched the Meredith Viera interview with the polygamist wives. Her questions were the MOST inappropriate and biased that I have heard from a jounalist!!!!! What those women consider "normal" is abuse. According to the law, if you do not protect your children from abuse (allowing someone to have sex with your 12 year old daughter), you are just as guilty as the perpetrator. I am now finished watching this unprofessional jounalist and the Today show!!!

I thought that it was interesting to have a "Lost Boy" (the middle one) wearing a black T-shirt with brass knuckles on it. Brass knuckles are illegal in most places.

Golly, Ms Vieira, your FLDS interview didn't even approach softball; more like whiffle-ball. If Dockstadter's daughter is really 23, and the Today website reports her age as 37; it seems you could have asked her if her 23-year old is her oldest daughter, or something. Maybe ask if she was 13 or 14 when she got pregnant with her 23-year-old and how, exactly, did that happen.

It troubles me that the national media and Today is allowing the FLDS to run its public relations efforts without challenge. You did asked them if sex with a 15-year old constituted child abuse but then let them duck the question.

I think you owe your viewers more balanced coverage and a challenge to the "I am not aware" responses these women give. They are coached for these interviews, you need to prepare for them.
