Friday Q&A: Lemonade stands, pollution, and the Li River

June 27, 2008

Meredith tackles more of your questions! Ask yours today, and check back next Friday for the answer. Maybe she'll choose yours!

Sam said: Does Lily spend all summer at camp or does she also do jobs like babysitting and yard work too? How about your boys...have they ever mowed lawns, painted fences, or worked at Fast Food restaurants to earn their own spending money?

Yes, Lily does part-time babysitting year round. For several summers Ben and Gabe ran an excellent lemonade stand (cookies too) at the end of our driveway, which happened to be across the street from a golf course—you’d be amazed how thirsty those golfers were, and they always left a nice tip.

Melanie said: Meredith, has the air in Beijing gotten any better since you were there last time? I think about what it will be like for the athletes in August.

The air seemed a little better this time than it was a year ago in the city. Supposedly they are shutting down factories and cutting down the number of cars within the city in an effort to cut the pollution.

Kelliann said: Did you sail down the Li River? I lived and taught English in China for seven months in Yangshuo on the Li River. I wrote to my friend, Jonathan, who just opened his own school there, to yell "hello Meredith" if he saw any cameras!

The day I was supposed to be going to the Li River, I received a phone call from New York with the terribly sad news that Tim Russert had passed--we all came home immediately. I hope during my time in China this August I get the chance to experience that trip.

Feel free to post a question of your own for next time!

Meredith, I'm not sure if you are aware of what happened during Kathy Lee Gifford's comments on the Today Show - she blatantly disrespected Pagans on the show calling them "dirty, nasty Pagans" which seems to me to be incredibly disrespectful and a shocking show of hate-speech for a show like the Today Show. I and several others have written the Today Show producers, with no response, no sign of an apology from Kathy Lee who, though we're all aware is a Fundamentalist in her beliefs, I do believe owes the Pagan community (a growing religious community, just ask the VA!) an apology. Now, I know this hasn't got much to do with lemonade stands or the Olympics; but I was so shocked by what I heard Kathy Lee say, I feel that someone there needs to address this - and asap. I've been watching The Today Show since the 70's, and have never been as disappointed in what I've seen as I was watching Kathy Lee's hate-speech. I'd rather not watch than watch her again.
Is there anything at all that you can do to get the attention of the powers-that-be and help us get that apology?
Thank you,
Rev. Shonna Rhein-Gariepy

Those lemonade tips must have been phenomenal to be sustaining the boys so many years since.

Your sarcastic remark is mean-spirited and unnecessary. It is always pathetic when an adult attacks someone else's children. Do you have any shame at all?

What are you looking forward to most about the Beijing Olympics? I know you said Ben will be there, but is the rest of your family coming as well? If so, what are they excited to see? Hope you have a great time in Beijing! Can't wait to hear all about it!

I don't know where to write this,so I will just write it here. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like Matt Lauer insults you quite a bit on air. If that is the case, you are being professional by taking it as well as you do. It seems he is jealous of you by what I see. I see you as a very intelligent woman with a more than proven journalist background. His background doesn't compare to yours. You're pretty tough to put up with him.

Sometimes I play video games with my kids and I'm surprisingly good at some the Nintendo wii games (like tennis!) Are you good at video games? I have seen you play on the show before.

Since you write your own blog, do you ever frequent any other blogs online? Like Perez Hilton or any news blogs or anything like that?

I love reading yours!

My wife and I were so, "blown out of the water" by Jennifer Chung...we had to send this irl to you, Meredith!

Comment! We live in such a diverse, global village , today, made up of the kind of persons like Jennifer Chung, that yesterday's Sterotypical characterizations of segments or groups of our population, as a whole, is truly becomming increasing outdated with little to no practical value.
The Jennifer Chung(s) of our society is proof of that fact.

p.s. We love you on the Today show, especially when you hosted the TV show, "Who Wants To Be a Millionare/".
God bless!

Hi Meredith

On the Today Show today 8/7/08 - I noticed you had a pair of eye glasses on with black frames and red arms. They looked great on you - would you tell me who is the designer? Thank so much - love you and glad to see you everyday on the Today Show.
