On The Run With Meredith
So much has happened since I’ve last checked in. I never mentioned this at the time, but I fell for the New Kids on the Block, literally, when they performed on the plaza a few weeks ago. It was raining and I slipped, smashing my shin into the outdoor stage. At this point, I’m on speed dial at the NBC infirmary. Nurse Theresa Hayde showed up in a flash with a wheel chair and enough bandages to cover the Elephant Man. My reputation as a klutz precedes me. I ended up hobbling over to the infirmary so Dr. Tanya Benenson could check out the damage. I’ve mentioned my security guy Joe before—I think he’s at his wit's end with me because once again he was standing by my side when I went down for the count (not his fault, of course). As we were making our way to see the doctor, Joe turned to me and asked ‘When is your contract up?’ He felt so badly but he’s stuck with Calamity Jane, I suppose. (The shin still smarts a bit, but at least the scrape is healed).
Following the shin incident, I came down with a stomach flu right before Memorial Day Weekend and missed the shows on Thursday and Friday, leading to Matt’s endless teasing about how ‘convenient’ it was that the bug bit me before a holiday weekend. I was down for the count, Lauer…and after 48 hours and still feeling queasy, I was just grateful to be able to go up to Cape Cod on Saturday for a memorial service for Richard’s Dad (who died in February). That evening at dusk, the whole family scattered his ashes on the beach surrounding his home. A local bagpiper who we had never met but had heard playing for years across the bay agreed to send him off with some beautiful music. When we asked him what we could pay him for his time and talent he said ‘No, that’s what neighbors do for neighbors.’
As for this blog…I’m heading off to China on Wednesday, so I should have some great stories to tell in the days to come. Tomorrow I’ll try to answer some of your questions.
In the meantime, I do have a ‘shameless plug’—my husband Richard is now hosting a new radio show on coping with chronic illness. The show is named after his book ‘Strong At the Broken Places’ which profiles five people living with illness. It’s an effort to open up the dialogue to folks everywhere, because Richard has discovered in his book travels around the country that everyone has a story to tell, and by talking to each other, we gain strength. The program which will feature a variety of guests, airs on Sunday nights at 6pm on WABC radio in New York City, and can be accessed via the website: www.wabcradio.com

Have a safe trip. As they usually are, your stories regarding China will be wonderful.
Are any of your Children able to go with you?
Kudos to Richard for all of his endevors with educating those with chronic illness.
I just hit my 14 yr. Cancer survivor milestone after being given less than 5 yrs. chance of survival. As my surgeon said "you are just too ornery to kick the bucket." Actually, it is keeping a positive attitude.
Bon Voyage.
awesome. Richard has a radio show. i love web radio and podcasts.
have a safe trip to China!
so i have to say this ..it takes alot for me to comment or respond to anything on television... i have watched the today show for years but today is the very last day... i am outraged that the today show and merideth interviewed danny bonnaducci as an "expert" on drug use and a child star.... first of all... he has made a living being a "child star"... secondly he has one of the single most outlandish perspectives on being a child drug using star.... of course it is totally to perpetuate his carreer. how can anyone give creedance to this sort of tabloid journalism? tatum oniel had an unfortunate incident. does it mean its due to being a child star? no...does it mean abuse? no... there are plenty of persons all over the united states that abuse drugs and get caught just like tatum... i never seem to hear about them......
so to the today show and merideth i bid you a fond farewell and take my leave of this sort of hack tabloid journalism... (btw.. i can't believe you sit there with a straight face and do those interviews)
hey meredith i hope yuo have a really really safe trip to china....:)! i watch your show every morning, you and matt are so awesome. i was at the today show just about two months ago. you came over and did a segment right in front of me and my mom. i really love what you and matt do every morning....it really makes my day. i was just wandering, would it be easy for me too get a job on the weekends at the today show when i get just a little bit older? hope you can respond soon. please e-mail me if you can and just let me know. thank you
Meredith
Being it happened Friday glad Joe didn't toss you out LOL Being on the plaza alot I always feel for him & the Security gang on Fridays as they always seems at whits end on Fridays being how crazy it gets and NKTB was definitely one of the craziest days out there. How he & the rest of the security gang handle each week is beyond me guess it's all those days walking the beat as NYPD that help them keep their heads screwed on during all the commotion of a concert day.
Glad to hear that shins healing though as you mentioned it briefly a few blogs ago but didn't go into details. As I said this morning have a great & SAFE trip!
Dave
I enjoy your blog. Have a safe trip to China. Does Matt have a blog? I enjoyed reading the one several months ago about taking his son out fishing. Would love to hear about his family as well.
We just moved to Sacramento, where unfortunately they do not air the third hour of Today. I am most disappointed about that. I guess that is up to the local networks, eh
Geez, I can't believe some of the things people come here and stamp their little feet about. I'm also sick of seeing Danny Bonaduce getting trotted out every time a former child star gets into trouble but, really, it's hardly worth getting your panties in a wad.
And Tatum O'Neil hasn't had just one incident -- she's been very open about her drug addiction and all the problems it has caused in her life.
And, the reason you don't hear about every person who has a drug problem is that they are not famous. Would you really be interested in hearing about some anonymous guy in Indiana who got caught buying crack?
Anyway, have a great trip, Meredith. We'll be looking forward to reading about it.
Finally a story about kids who are thinking beyond themselves and volunteering to help others. How disappointing that none of you commented on it, but instead resumed discussing Sex and The City.
I love the blue color you are wearing today (Wednesday). You look great in it.
Travel safely.
There is one thing I was disappointed about on your website. It said "Obama claims Democratic nomination." That was certainly a biased way to write it. He won the nomination despite the tricks of the clintons! And its a historic event so I wish you had noted that!
why do you not wear a wedding band??
