July Madness

I told you I was going to learn how to fire a machine gun, and I wasn't fibbing. No one has figured out why I did it, so here is a clue: in case you are still investigating, you don't need a tremendous amount of intelligence to figure it out.
MachineGun.jpg While you're pondering, I am already packing for another trip. Next week (my vacation week), my son Ben and I are going to trace our family's roots. We're taking planes, boats and automobiles, so it should be quite an adventure.

After that, Gabe, Richard and I are off to look at colleges (can't believe our middle child is going to be a high school senior). As for Lily, she finally made it to camp after getting a clean bill of health. I think I heard her yell goodbye as she raced out the door.

Is it just me, or is summer flying by just as fast?

I am guessing something to do with the FBI (FIBBIES and Intelligence in the words...)

Have a good time on your vacation, Meredith! I'm one of those recently graduated seniors that is looking forward to college, so summer seems to be dragging a bit for me, but in reality, I'm sure it'll fly by.

Meredith.. your totally right.. summer is going by way too fast. Before we know it, it will be fall again and back to school! CRAZY! Where are you and Ben going to trace your roots? Sounds super fun! Can't wait to hear about it!

I agree, summer is flying by so fast.
Once July 4th is here it seems to go faster yet.
I wish the winter months went just as fast.
Have a good vacation next week. Will miss seeing
you on the show.

From the sounds of it, you won't have much time to relax until after the Olympics. When does Today make their way to Beijing and what is the run-down of talent that will be there?

nope it is not just you! i really think the summer is going by way too fast! have a great day and GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY! :)

Hi Meredith,

I LOVE YOU ON THE TODAY SHOW!!! You absolutely rock. Your genuine and laid back personality is the reason that I tune in everyday.
My Question: How do you balance journalistic responsibility? IE: Why do you think people care more about Christie Brinkley's divorce than the precious men and women dying in Iraq?
Thanks for sharing a little bit of yourself with the TODAY show audience every day.

please don't use my email. I tried looking for a way to write about a program I saw today, but couldn't find a message board. I found your program on cutting your budget in half and how a family did it was not reaching the middle class family. How many women go for a weekly pedicure or pay 25 dollars to wash their car. In this age of possible recession, how can you show a family such as a young couple that can spend such as they can. Please show programs that are realistic to your viewers. We who mow our own lawns, take care of our own children and clean our own houses. My husband and I both have master degrees and don't live like that. Maybe we are not living the 'real life',

Sounds like a very interesting trip you are going on, you seem to be on the go all the time.
Have a great trip with your son, I am sure you will.

I think it has to do with the FBI - the clues being FIB (as in FIBBIE) and "investigating."

Over the holiday weekend I was playing a great game of Taboo with my family. You know, the board game? We also played Scattegories. What is your favorite board game? Do you ever play?

Hey Meredith!

How is your summer? Going so fast...

I am currently training for a Triathlon in September and am really scared! But it is a blast... made me think... Has there ever been a physical activity that scared you but you did anyway?

Thanks,
Eric

Meredith,

Thanks for the great post. I love iVillage!

Hi Meredith,

I was curious to hear your opinion on guns now you've done a story requiring you to use them. The "right to keep and bear arms" is a part of the second amendment of the American constitution and something many American take great pride in.

Here in Australia just over 12 years a go, 35 people were killed in a massacre at Port Arthur, Tasmania. In the months after the then Prime Minister John Howard introduced tough gun control laws which have been labelled as extremely successful.

Given the number of shootings that have been occurring in the US how do you feel the issue of guns should be dealt with

I'm with lynne who commented on the family who tried to live on half their budget for a week--I hope that the Today Show doesn't actually think that they are a 'typical' American family. The woman should be ashamed of herself! It didn't appear that she worked outside of the home, yet she didn't cook much, had a lawn service, housecleaner (she alluded to this afterward), and daycare provider (it showed a savings when she and a friend agreed to watch each other's children)! What does she do all day, besides treat herself to a manicure/pedicure and get the car washed? I, for one, do not buy things like a bottle of water and not remember spending the money--I am very aware of every dollar that is spent. The woman also needs to think about the message she's sending her children about the value of money...She needs to get a clue about the household finances before she spends her family into the poorhouse!

Hi,

I love the show. However, recently the stories are getting ridiculous! WHo cares that Obama "almost forget" Clinton? Who CARES about Christy Brinkley?? I mean, you guys do a "report" about the media's fixation onthis... YOU ARE THEM! You could NOT report and then be the bigger station!

Joan K. said:

Hi Meredith,
You look like you can handle a machine gun, maybe you are going to be in some olympic event, yeah right.
The couple on the show today splitting their spending in half wasn't the average family, that's for sure. I wonder how many families have lawn care people, house cleaners and get pedicures plus eat out a lot. That family was not the right family for this spot, my opinion.
Have a great vacation Meredith, we will all miss you.

I agree with Lynne. The typical American family has a hard enough time making ends meet - with the rising cost of everything! It was a very unrealistic view of today's family.

By the way though, I have followed you since the View - and think you are a great addition to the "Today" show. Keep up the good work.

Meredith - A GOOD interviewer does not allow his biases to show! Maybe you should stick to the fluff stuff!!

Meredith,

I truly enjoy you on the today show and think you're wonderful. And I'm very glad you get to take such fun and exciting vacations. However, you always seem to be gone every other week. As a morning news show viewer, I've always expected consistency with the host in terms of being there when I turn on the set every morning. I always figured the only people who should be "on assignment" are the reporters in the field....anchors/host need to be in place when viewers turn on their sets. It's that consistency that helps develop a level of comfort.

However, you seem to be gone quite a lot and it makes me wonder did NBC sign some some sort of "co-anchor" agreement between you and Ann Curry, given that she seems to be in the host seat just as much as you have been lately. That's whey I admire Jay Leno....he seems to realize that when people watch the "Tonight Show", they want to see Jay Leno in place, not a guest host every other week.

I'm not saying you shouldn't take time off...it just seems that I get paid much less than you do, but I seem to be at work much more (which isn't a bad deal on your part!). However, in order to retain viewers such as myself who like to see YOU in the morning, I would recommend, that you spend less time "on assignment" and more in the host seat. As much as I want to stay with the "Today Show", Maggie Rodriguez over at CBS is starting to grow on me, because she's always in place with a smile on her face!

To Meredith Vieira -

Very unusual for me, but I caught your interview with John McCain this morning on your morning show.

Normally, I watch FoxNews, as I feel the other news outlets are extremely, liberally biased.

I found your interview with John McCain to be the typical liberal browbeating of republican candidates and officials; antagonistic, one-sided accusatory posturing to elicit a pre-determined impression to your viewers.

There was nothing fair-and-balanced about your interview.

My question, is will you question Obama with equally aggressive and accusatory tactics and questions - including the furrowed brow on your face that left no question as to your contempt for McCain?

The channel must have been on because of another program I was watching last night, I assure you I won't tune in again to your liberal propagandistic drilling's....unless I hear you are interviewing Obama.

Then, I would tune in just to confirm my suspicion that Obama will get a very pleasant soft-ball and patronizing interview from you, liberal sympathizer you appear to be.

Meredith:

You must have forgot to put down the machine gun during this morning's interview with John McCain. You were very rude and aggressive, and didn't let him finish answering your questions. I'm sure your audience wanted to hear what he had to say, not you and your attacks. This is certainly different treatment than Barack Obama has received from you and others on NBC. I didn't see Katie Couric accompany Senator McCain on any of his Senate fact-finding trips. Your well demonstrated bias has eliminated any credibility NBC once owned as a trustworthy news organization. It's all spin and fantasy, and I am finished watching your so called version of the "news."

Cheers.

Oh but it is going so fast, the days pass, sun starting east and ending west, ushering longer legs and sounding the retreat of dimples and rolls. As autumn approaches, my babies seem to run.

Better go play before it gets dark.
