Q&A: Olympics, World Travels and Ms. Pacman

July 3, 2008

Meredith tackles more of your questions! Ask yours today, and check back next Friday for the answer. Maybe she'll choose yours!

Lauren said: Meredith- What are you looking forward to most about the Beijing Olympics? I know you said Ben will be there, but is the rest of your family coming as well? If so, what are they excited to see? Hope you have a great time in Beijing! Can't wait to hear all about it!

I’ve never been to an Olympics so I’m particularly looking forward to the opening ceremonies, and I love gymnastics. Having profiled some of the Chinese gymnasts a year ago when I was in Beijing, I know how incredibly talented those athletes are and can’t wait to see the competitions. As for Ben, he’s covering it for sports so I doubt I’ll get to see him much.

S. Smiley said: hey Meredith... the show has sent you all over the place recently, but if you could go ANYWHERE in the world for a story, where would you go? And if you could go anywhere for FUN, where would you go?

I’m actually going to both places in a week but I can’t tell you where in the world it is—you’ll find out when the segment airs. But here’s a hint: it’s an island, the people are warm and friendly, but it’s been known to erupt…

Joanna De Rosa said: Sometimes I play video games with my kids and I'm surprisingly good at some the Nintendo Wii games (like tennis!) Are you good at video games? I have seen you play on the show before.

I have terrible eye-hand coordination. The last video game that I truly excelled at was Ms. Pacman.

Happy July 4th -- wishing everyone a fun and safe holiday weekend!

Feel free to post a question of your own for next time!

I can't wait for gymnastics either. It's always awesome. I'm rooting for Nastia Liukin to win the Women's All-Around, but who knows what will happen. My other favorite event to watch is diving simply because I'm a diver, so I can appreciate how amazing the athletes really are.

The media uses a negative tone when covering CEOs who make astronomical salaries, but why no coverage regarding those IN media who make huge salaries...at companies that are eliminating the jobs of others in order to save money? Those huge salaries have cost others their jobs.

Hi! Do you ever watch shows like "The Soup" or "Best Week Ever"? I ask because you or your colleagues sometimes shown in an amusing light and I wonder how you feel about that. (For example, The Soup showed your interview with Suze Orman where she randomly disappeared and joked that perhaps you made that happen.)

Meredith! I went to NYC last monday, but sadly we arrived too late for Today. We went to NBC Studios across the street from your set and I turned around and saw you leaving across the street! I never expected to see you, but it was the greatest surprise. Too bad I didn't make it in time to see you, but it was still really cool. My question for you is do you, Matt, Ann, and Al ever have time to hang out with each other outside of the show?

Meredith,
I have visited the show once before on the first day of Where in the World this year, I was so happy when you gave me a hug! My sister and I were so happy to find out that Miley Cyrus was coming on the show, but we are going to be on vacation, so we cant come. Are you excited when big musical guests come onto the show? I really want to be pen pals with you, Email me!

Dear woman, I have so enjoyed getting to know you better recently through your honesty and candor here. What a delight you are to read; it strengthens the character you present on the screen in so many ways. I daresay that if you ever find yourself in these woods and in want of the company of another good conversationalist for tea [or insert preferred libation here], do look me up.

As for a question, hmm.... I don't know enough yet to ask a really itching question, so how about this one: What made you decide to share of yourself and your time through blogging? What's it like for you to touch base with the public on this level?

I look forward to more good reading here. Thanks for reaching out to us.

Anne.

Hi Meredith--My daughter-in-law has been teaching at Beijing Foreign Studies University for 5 months. I visited them for 10 days in May. The visit was wonderful. My son took me everywhere in Beijing. also Visted the Great Wall. Even though the sun was not visable the weather was wonderful. As far as smog goes it didn't bother me at all. It was clear almost every day. What a wonderful opportunity for my son, his wife and children Olivia 9 and Evan 4.

Hi Meredith! I have been a big fan of yours ever since you began on "The View". As a 27-year old woman, you have always been a role model for me in both my personal life and career. I have especially admired how you handle yourself as a professional and mother at the same time. You are certainly someone that women of my generation can really look up to! My question is this: have you had to change a lot in your life since joining "Today" two years ago?

Hey Meredith,

I am coming to New York City in December. I have always wanted to see New York City at Christmas time. I also have always wanted to meet you. Is there any way to find out when you are going to be on the show during December, so I can plan my trip around that? Also, is there a way to ensure you get to meet the anchors when you come to the Today Show or do you just come out to the Plaza? It would be a great honor to meet you. I think you are doing a GREAT job on the Today Show!! Thanks for the info!!!

America The Beautiful - Why exploit the strong women of the Olympics?

America The Beautiful touched on the fact that women are concerned with their weight.
Thank goodness SOMEONE is worried about the psychological effects the media is having on today's females. But the problem is not only the runway models and the magazine adds, but lies within the confines of the Olympic coverage itself!

For instance - I have watched how the men of the television news media, NBC included, have continuously sexualized something as innocent and sacred as the Women's Olympics. What is this saying to our daughters? What is it saying to our female athletes?

Would you want your daughter treated this way?

The first obvious example that comes to mind, and I've already seen it weeks before the Olympics have started, is the Women's Olympic Soccer Team. It is sad, but the only snippet they keep showing, exploiting, is two winners falling in the sand, is extremely provocative and obviously intended for men's sexual pleasure, as is the many closeups of their behinds!
I find this very sad that we can't even have Women's Olympics, something that should be girl-empowering, instead sold out as a tool for men's sexual viewing pleasure, something to laugh about, thereby having the opposite empowering effects that it should have on our young females, or any females for that matter.

Please clean up your act at NBC. This is the Olympics for God's sakes, don't use it to further exploit the females that it should be empowering!

Meredith, can you enlighten the network?

Meridith made a remark this morning about the pictures shown of the basketball team watching the swimming. What did you see in the picture that was so bad you wouldnt mention what you saw? It has had me confused ever since you said it.
