Friday Newsflash...
I’m sitting in my office waiting for John McCain to
announce his choice for his vice-presidential running
mate, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. I can’t speak
for everybody in the news media, but we on the Today
show were totally taken by surprise and everybody is
scrambling to find out as much about her as quickly as
they can. Certainly her name wasn’t on any short list
of choices.
One thing is for sure, the attention is off Barack Obama. Last night he makes this historic speech and in less than a news cycle the focus has switched to the other camp. It should make my trip to St. Paul that much more interesting. I’ll be curious to know what you all think.
As for your questions, I’m Olympic’ed out, but here’s one about my trip to the Azores:
AJ said: visited the Azores long ago...remember that the sand is black and that it's so windy that ropes are strung along the walking paths. Is this still the case?
Well I don’t know if all the beaches are black sand but there are ropes along the shoreline in Faial at the site of the Capelinhos volcano which erupted in 1957—the volcano erupted for almost a year, and when the lava hardened it actually connected the original volcano to the mainland. Many Azoreans were forced from their homes and emigrated to the U.S. thanks in part to the efforts of then senator John. F. Kennedy who helped to pass special legislation expediting the emigration. Many of those Azoreans had lung problems from the volcanic ash and ended up being patients of my Dad’s in East Providence.
I actually visited the site of the volcano while tracing my roots, and it felt like you were on another planet, There was something ‘other worldly’ about the whole place.

I was watching you all today -- and with the Olympics that ended just a week ago and the DNC then the RNC (and with Millionaire) -- my only question is: when do you sleep!?
I hope you have time to catch some Zzz's every once in awhile.
Well, as an Obama supporter Im glad McCain picked someone who is socially conservative. The Women for Hilary couldn't vote for someone who doesn't believe in their right to choose! I think you all needed to do a better service to Obama today and give him more coverage on that amazing speech!
Personally, I like McCain's choice. I think it makes the race that much more exciting. Some people, of course, are already saying that Palin doesn't have the experience to be President should something happen to McCain, but I don't think that's a very legitimate criticism. After all, as a Governor, she has more executive experience than Obama does and quite a few Americans believe he's got the experience necessary. All that aside, I can't help but be pleased that a woman made the ticket.
Your segment on your heritage was very moving. Please tell Ann hers was, also.
The above picture of you and Ben is really great. It has been fun watching him grow into a young man.
The Today Show family is a great way to enjoy my first cup of coffee. Thanks
Have you enjoyed your summer, its almost over. Make the most of it!
By the way as I've said before, your awesome and the coolest newscaster EVER!
Hi Meredith,
I have emailed the Today show in an attempt to reach you and then came across your blog. I had previously sent my story in regarding Meredith's roots. I had forwarded an email indicating that my father's name is Manuel Vieira Goulart da Rosa. He was born in the island of Faial and we immigrated to Canada in 1971. After sending you that message I showed my father your video of your trip to Faial and he immediately recognized your grandfather Antonio Vieira. He explained to me Antonio (your grandfather) came from a family of 7 brothers (Joao, Arthur, Jacinto, Luis, and my father does not recall the other names)and then after 7 males a daughter named Mariana was born. My father explained to me that Antonio, was my grandfather's first cousin. My father's great uncle's immigrated to California along with my father's brothers. He also immediately recognized the two ladies in the video related to you that you visited in Faial. When my father saw the chest in the house in Faial, as you came close to it, he indicated that he remembered getting clothes given to him from family, clothes that had come from the US. My father recalls Antonio Vieira visiting Faial after the second world war, once the waterways were open again to casual travel. After the volcanic eruptions in 1957, Luis, Arthur and Jacinto also immigrate to the US. My father never saw them again and did not know of their whereabouts in the US. We have visited New Bedford Mass., several times, practically every year since 1974, as my father's sister lives there, and so did my grandmother for some time after my grandfather's death in 1981, in California. I hope that in some way this fills some gap for you. As my father left my home today, he indicated he would see if anything further comes to mind of those times that may be of benefit to you.

Ilidia Sa Melo
Hi Meredith,
So, it wasn't just me (an American who has been abroad for 4 years) that didn't know who Sarah Palin was. It seems that this was another desperate attempt to get in the White House, like a child trying to get their parents attention by tipping over their glass. Let's see how this plays out over the next couple of days. Keep us posted, as you always do so well!

Hello Meredith,
I know you began taping for the new season of Millionaire a while ago. Do you know when the new season will air?
Hello Meredith,
I cannot see how the American people will see Sarah Palin a good choice for a Republican VP. She's under investigation for "bullying" people because of her Governor status. THEN to find that her 17 year old daughter is pregnant and are getting married. So does this all mean that we can justify teen pregnancy? Everyone makes mistakes. However, I think that Palin is definately NOT ready to take the 2nd highest seat in the USA!! I think that if her daughter was pregnant... well, it happens. It's the bullying part that gets me. Being a celebrity or a person of high power does not give one the right to trample another. Sorry for my strong review....
McCain picked an inexperienced women. I am a working Mom and I do believe women can don anything they want but your children do come first. I would want a full time president and she cannot possible be a good mom and good president. I hope for her kids sake she chooses to be a good mom.
Dear Today Show;
After watching this mornings broadcast which was severely slanted on teen pregnancy, and Governor of Alaska concerning her daughter; I have lost a great deal of respect for Meredith, the today show, and it’s staff. We firmly believe that you should have taken Barack Obama’s lead and left it alone. Obviously many of you and your staff have not had an unplanned or unexpected event in your family life or a son or daughter do something that caused a series of unexpected events in your family.
I feel the show was extremely biased towards it being an unacceptable thing to have happen in America, and who are you and the psychologist on the show to have the right to ask the types of questions they did. Do any of you have children? If you do have children, have you not had moments that your children did something that changed the scope of your family or things that you were not proud or pleased.
Let me ask you this, if your daughter had gotten pregnant (that is if you have children), and the other party responsible asked for their hand in marriage would you not be pleased that they both accepted responsibility for their actions. As many times you have brought up stories on paparazzi, please respect the daughter whom is not running or selected as a vice president. As a result of the newscast, I will be a long time if ever that we no watch the show. I hope that many more people who saw the show do the same. I have been amazed at what the press would report and be appalled at but the standards the Show set today are a new low transcending all that I can remember that is bad about news today.
You should have taken Obama’s lead and left it at that. Regardless of the Dam Ratings
Sincerely
The Lusardi’s
Former watchers of NBC News.
How's the convention?
I love the Today show most of the time but I feel you and all the networks are beating a dead horse. What does her daughter have to do with the race????? It would be nice if you spent just half the time you spend on the neg. to concentrate on the issues that are IMPORTANT to us in this race.
I think it is a waste of my time to watch these networks because all I see hear is gossip. OK, once you have talked about something like pregnancy, religion, etc., LET IT GO, you are all so eager to ruin a young girl and her family. How would you feel if we talked about your past, your wife, and your children?????
From a very unhappy observer of the Today show, no wonder the NBC network is so low on the network list!!!
Bettie
It has come out that Palin's 17 year old daughter is pregnant! I have to say "WHO CARES!" Why the media has to take the woman's personal life and turn it in to a frenzy I'll never know. Nobody is perfect, so leave it alone and move on to more important things that we should be worrying about. Its always something, I bet if you go back to some of our earliest presidents there was some dark secret. I just think it is terrible that we focus on stuff like this when there is much more that we need to focus on!
meredith,
congratualtions on being one of forbes magazine's 100 most powerful women in the world. you ranked higher than barbara walters and katie coutic. how does that make you feel that many believe that you have an influence on the world?
That teenager's pregnancy is none of my business. But I do care about the rampant hypocrisy among these right wingers. Would all these folks be complaining about the coverage if one of Obama's daughters had gotten pregnant? I doubt it.
Hi Meredith! Thanks for doing a great job! You make TODAY brighter! Keep up the good work.
Hello, Meredith -
Thank you for hosting a blog to leave comments - I am totally and constantly amazed at the bias of NBC regarding the upcoming elections. I feel the network fell to a new low by harping on the pregnancy of the teenage daughter of Gov. Palin. I was disgusted with the network's sudden concern with regards to the negative impact of teen pregnancy to our youth, their families and the nation - sublimally linking all of this to Sarah Palin's daughter and her family. You all have truly sunk to a new low when news is utilized to try to promote your political agendas and choice of candidate. I seriously doubt the Today show planned a program on teen pregnancy until they learned Sarah Palin's daughter was pregnant - then a choice was made to exploit a teenager who is already dealing with a life altering experience.
Today I was also sad to hear only negative comments about Gov. Palin from the Today Show - I truly wonder what has happened to unbiased news reporting....I also feel in the last major election, the news media was very biased which backfired as the American public chose to express and show their own views by their vote. Not everyone feels the same way as news reporters try to convince us to feel and quite frankly, many are totally disgusted with the lack of objectivity from our media. It would be nice to hear what our Democratic Congress is doing to deal with the real issues pressing the American public today - no matter how much a Pres. proposes policies - it is the Congress making the decisions affecting our lives with the President's primary task is to be the Commander in Chief.
Perhaps you can be the one to bring ethical objectivity and clarity to the Today Show- - begin to talk about the issues of concern to the American public and openly discuss the positives and negatives of all the candidates....Cindy
I'm fascinated by everyone's journey to delve into their family histories! I hope that you're compiling your memories into a scrapbook of some sort! These are family stories that need to be remembered for generations to come!

Meredith, When the Today sends you out on assignments do they try to send you to things you are supportive of or are interested in? For example you are covering the Republican Convention and Matt covered the Democratic Convention - would it matter to the Today show as to whether you are a republican or not when they send you to cover the Republican convention?? Know what I mean??
Thanks
Michelle
I like the Today show and I think Meredith Viera is a terrific part of the program. However, I turned off the programming today. I think the questions regarding Gov. Palin are ridiculous and overdone. Rudy Guliani was right, all woman should be offended by how Gov. Palin is being treated.
We all seem to love the Today Show. I enjoy watching the show every day. But whats up with your political coverage. Your all like giddy little girls with Obama and then like dirty alley cats with Palin. Its all very disappointing, I would like to think at Journalist are unbias, as hard as that may be. And now Dr. Phil commenting on Palin's daughter, please! Meredith and Matt, please remember your responsiblity to all of us.
The very first thing about Sarah Palin which hit me was the fact that she went back to work 3 days after giving birth to Trig.
Knowing what I do about infant development, I highly doubt that Sarah has properly bonded with this infant. With all her emphasis on family values, I would think she would give this child the very best chance at life by breast feeding (at least for a few of months). Instead, she went right back to work. There are so many American working Mom in jobs where they don't receive paid maternity leave. Other high ranking public officials in this country have certainly taken advantage of parental leave. No one would have thought less of her if she had taken time off. IMHO she set us back 100 years.
I am sorry her daughter had the misfortune of getting pregnant at an early age. I don't fault Sarah for her daughter's actions, but wonder if this young girl received proper guidance, love and attention in her formative years or were Mom and Dad just too busy?
On this morning Today Show (03Sept), you quickly "Agreed", in agreement with David Gregory, that no one in the media has questioned Ms. Palin's challenges of balancing Motherhood and Vice Presidential duties. That simply is not true:
29Aug - CNN ".... role of Vice President, it seems to me, would take up an awful lot of her time, and it raises the issue of how much time will she have to dedicate to her newborn child."
30Aug - Good Morning America: "...Palin family also has an infant with special needs. What leads you, the Senator, and the Governor to believe that one won't affect the other in the next couple of months?"
Before you make hasty statements, be aware of what your fellow colleagues such as John Roberts and Bill Weir are stating.
Alexandria
I was very disappointed in your coverage today of Sarah Palin. I have always defended the Today Show to my husband about it presenting all sides of a story. Today you totally blew my confidence as a mom by highlighting and going into detail of Palin's children. I do not see you putting your children and all their warts on tv you are public they are not as it should be for all political canditates or public people. Why were the Bush twins , Chelsea, or Obamas children left with a pass for their children activites or adolescent activities. By putting so much time on being a snoop to these children of Sarah Palin you have blown your credibility as a news coverage with heart or for that matter
any credibility.
Spend time on the candidates and their views and you will be considered a news team not a soap opera
As a registered Independent, I agreed when I heard Kathie Lee say that she's open to learning more about Sarah Palin before announcing an opinion.
Not all in the media are that open minded.
Palin does have more executive experience than Mr. Obama and has shown that she can get things done.
I like the fact that she honors both Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton.
As for the teen pregnancy, with the media glorifying teen sex and single celebrity pregnancies, it's a difficult environment in which to raise kids.
And Meredith, whenever the subject of teen pregnancy comes up, you say to the guest, "What's causing it, is it abstinence only?"
Why do you never ask, "What's causing it, is it kids emulating what they see in the ubiquitous media?"
Even those of us who believe that abstinence should be just one of the elements taught in sex education can see that the media makes a vast contribution to teen pregnancy. When you close your eyes to that, you make yourself much less credible.
I am so insulted by your attitude toward Governor Palin. Do you not realize that your negative opinion is so obviously presented through your questions, comments and facial expressions?
For decades, women have fought to be judged equally with men. The women’s rights movement has been at the forefront of the political landscape since I was a child, constantly striving for women to be viewed equally with men in their careers and to be paid accordingly. Ever so slowly opinions changed and the trend became more considerate of women in the workplace. Now there are many women who are well respected leaders in the business community.
However suddenly, women such as yourself, have blatantly chosen to go against these ideals. You attack a WOMAN for her decision to pursue a position for which she is well qualified. You and others, question her ability to balance her family and her career. I find you to be extremely hypocritical considering that it appears that you made the same choice to leave your own children to pursue your job. You are unashamedly allowing your political views to compromise decades worth of work on behalf of women. This negative, critical attack on Govenor Palin will have an effect long after election day has passed. The “women can’t be good employees and good mothers at the same time” attitude has never been completely defeated in this country and this most recent argument against the prospective VP has only reinforced this misguided belief.
And you call yourself a journalist. When did your opinion ever have anything to do with the actual facts? From this point on, I dismiss your newsworthiness for total lack of credibility.
Stacy Clayton
I so agree! I am ver disappointed. Meredith, I did not like the tone this morning. I note that it was polar opposite of the coverage Mat did on the DNC. I am beginning to think that Bill OReiley is right about NBC.
Hi Saw you on today this am ,asking 3 network honcho's if their reporting is fair ,I liken that to asking the wolf if he thought Red Riding Hood was fair game . I agree with another who asked " why not include the sleaze and sex shown at all hours ,young celebs who are glorified etc make it all seem so exciting . very disappointing to some of us who don't rank with the "beautiful people "
An interesting piece about Palin circulating online:
http://fairlyconservative.com/the-race-for-president/a-chat-with-anne-kilkenny-from-alaska/
Meredith, maybe you will look into it. Our country is too precious to be put in these hands!
I never would have believed that JohnMcCain would want to be president so badly that he would endanger our country.
Why is it Republicans always come up with taglines that completely betray their true intentions:
"Country first" when what he really means is John McCain first, country last.
"No child left behind" means almost every child left behind.
"Mission accomplished" means absolutely nothing accomplished all these years later.

Meredith,
I know you write this blog and assume you review the posts that's what Please have a segment about the comments last night about Community Organizers and how deeply offensive they are. See below for my suggestion.
*********
I was put off by the comments last night about what community organizers do. As someone wrote, if anyone has every helped out in their community - soup kitchen, gathering clothes, etc. they would know. Please refer to the below link for more information and please have a segment announcing what they do. If organizations and the media will run the "one line zinger" over and over again about the comment, at least explain what they do and how offensive it is to people.
Here's a place to start. Thank you and I hope to see a segment soon.
http://organizersfightback.wordpress.com/
Meredith,
I respect you as a journalist and have for years. But I have to ask you...how is it you could interview that disgusting shock jock Bob Lester about Governor Sarah Palin...without running the story about how Bob Lester and his co-host Mark of the Bob and Mark show were both suspended for making a disgusting racial comment recently. And that Bob Lester, a Palin family friend, is the one who while interviewing the Governor on the radio...called Senate President Lyda Green a "cancer" and a "bitch" and made references to her weight. All the while the Governor was heard laughing like a little school girl, rather than acting like the Governor and putting an end to it.
Sarah will ONLY go on two talk shows locally...the Bob and Mark show and the Eddie Burke show. Because they're all lap dogs.
As for Sarah asking the media to respect her daughter's privacy...how about instead the Governor take a pass at the VP shot this time around rather than parading her daughter in front of the media.
There is much more to Sarah Palin than the media is reporting - or, that they want to report. She is NOT ready to be ONE heartbeat away from the presidency!
There is much about Obama/Biden I'm not thrilled with, but the same can be said for McCain/Palin. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we took the best of both parties and created a NEW functional party?! One can only hope.
Meredith you are a working Mom. Has anyone questioned your ability to be a good Mom especially considering the health of your husband. I think most people are too polite and understand the question would not be in good taste. So why does NBC think it is politically correct to attack Sarah Palin and her family? Have you questioned O'Bama on how much he is away from his two girls?
Meredith,
I watch the Today show as much as I can and I love it. I especially like you and Matt, and I get a lot of my news from NBC. For a while now, though, when I turn on MSNBC, I can't watch it for long because even if I agreed with the commentators, I just can't take the hate. The network has played on the fact that Keith Olberman hates republicans. I think Chris Matthews does too (especially after his visceral reaction to Palin's nomination last Friday). It's fine that MSNBC has decided to be the anti-FOX news, and there's a place for that. But the fact is, the NBC networks are (correctly) viewed as leaning toward the left, and very critical of the right. Even if NBC network tries to separate themselves from MSNBC cable, the viewers aren't dumb. We know that the two are inextricably linked and we know NBC's feelings towards conservatives.
What gets me is that after full-well knowing that's where your cable network stands, you're all acting like little girls who have had their feelings hurt on the playground because the republicans have taken you to task.
You guys either have to own up to being biased towards the left and say "fine, that's where we stand", or really stop being biased. You can all gripe all you want about your unfair treatment, but until your actions start supporting your gripes, it's all just wasted airtime.
I am losing total respect for NBC and for The Today Show. Who cares if Sarah Palin has a daughter who is pregnant at 17 (except... what kind of parenting skills does that show?) Who cares that she has a child with Down's Syndrome (tho I am very sympathetic to this, as someone who has 3+ years in Special Education)?
Get real! She is about as qualified to be President (should McCain die) as the local business leader in a small town.
What about her stand on environmental issues? What about how she feels about wildlife -- like wolves and the Polar Bears that she wanted taken off the endagered species list??
Tell the facts, and not the gossip. Get Real!
9-5-2008: From Rasmussen Reports...."Last night’s polling shows that, by a ten-to-one margin, voters believe reporters are trying to hurt Palin’s campaign rather than help."
In my opinion, Meredith treated Hillary in a completely biased manner to the benefit of Obama, her god. Journalism? Clearly biazed....NBC has gone down the drain.
In response to Danielle ~
Sarah Palin's comments about community organizers were in response to Barack Obama's comments about Palin being a "small town" mayor. He further implied that her mayoral was not significant service. Both candidates have provided service in their own way, neither of which should be deemed insignificant or more important than the other. It would be nice for Meredith and co. to provide an equal, unbaised aspect of the campaign.
AJ
" I can’t speak for everybody in the news media, but we on the Today show were totally taken by surprise and everybody is scrambling to find out as much about her as quickly "
So, because you were surprised, you went to 'blogs' for information, couldn't find any immediate dirt on Palin, so you went after her minor daughter. I'm ashamed of the 'junior high' journalism you and Good Morning America stooped too. I expect more indepth quality reporting. If I wanted gossip, I'd read it in line on the rags at the supermarket. If this is the journalism you think 'middle America' wants / understands, you are sadly wrong. Come out of you media cocoon and talk to people who don't spend their lives on tv or in 'newsrooms'...
Meridith,
I am a long time Today Show viewer and this morning watched your interview with one of John McCain's policital advisors. I felt that rather than impartially interviewing him, you were on the attack. I don't know your personal political views, but based on your interview this morning I would have to assume that you are liberal. I respect that you are a person with your own set of political beliefs, but I also feel very strongly that it is unfair for you, as a member of the media, to let them show so clearly in an interview. The Today Show is not Hard Ball with Chris Matthews. I have always respected the Today Show for being impartial, but I feel that your political interviews tend to show bias and felt that way especially this morning. Watch Matt Lauer interview and learn from him, his political beliefs do not show through during his interviews and neither should yours.
-Nancy
I don't think it's my imagination anymore ... Meredith you wear your political preference on your sleeve. It is natural that you favor one candidate over another, but it is your JOB to present facts, not YOUR preferences. Obama can do no wrong, but I'm still wondering what he has done. Has anyone on your socialist network ever probed into his past? I don't think so. I still watch your "news" so I can understand what the "other side" is saying these days. NBC and especially YOU are never critical of Obama. You sound like you're his mother! Most Americans don't make multiples of millions of dollars (like you) so massive tax increases have serious implications in our lives. Most Americans are worried about the economy and sustaining our safety and freedom. I haven't figured out what NBC cares about. You had a lot of nerve to whine about the media being picked on this morning. Go back and look at your Obama segments (there are plenty of them) and try to be objective. Maybe you'll see why you are not worthy of being a reporter. You should stick to fru-fru news and go back to The View.
Meredith, I disagree with a lot of these comments. People see whatever they want to see in these interviews. I saw a lot of the rumors about Palin last weekend over numerous internet blogs. I didn't hear a word about this on TV until after Palin released a statement about her daughter's pregnancy. I don't care about the pregnancy; that's their business. But the media shouldn't back down from questioning Palin's qualificiations and positions on actual issues. This is very important. You need no further reminder than the revelations earlier this year that the media failed to press/challenge Bush about his claims of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Do your job and ignore the outcry from the angry right wing. If they don't like, they can always turn to Fox for a steady diet of "unbiased" reporting.
Really Meredith...do you think small town, rural Americans are stupid , blind, AND deaf??? We can hear your words, see your facial expressions and body language, and believe me...we can interpret all of that and see for ourselves that you and your pals in the elite media are mean, cruel and completely bias. I watched your interview with Steve Schmidt this morning and when you asked him why the Republicans were bashing the press...I laughed out loud. Get a grip girl...you and Rosie are on the same page...NBC should give the two of you a show together. I thank you for showing me the light...I will never watch NBC or MSNBC again. I hear US Magazine is for sale...NBC should buy it...another perfect fit!
I saw your interview today (9/5/08) with John McCain's campaign manager. You seemed perplexed as to why there was such anger for the media regarding its treatment of Sarah Palin. After all, you asked, isn't it your/the media's job to ask questions? I couldn't agree with you more. It is your job to ask questions and investigate and VET the candidates...equally. Did you ask Mr. Obama whether or not he feels he should be spending time away from his young children to run for President and placing his family under the pressures of a national spotlight? (interesting isn't it that Joe Biden was portrayed as an admirable, strong leader by his son and party during the Democrat convention for his decision to accept the position of Senator right after his wife and daughter were killed in an accident and his sons were in the hospital. His children were in the hospital and their mother was dead, so they needed their father more than ever, but Biden took the demanding Senatorial position anyway. I guess that's different. Was he able to handle this situation more than Sarah Palin can handle her situation because he was a Liberal, a man, or both?) I apologize, but I have not seen every interview you have done, but I am certain that you asked Mr. and Mrs. Obama the details about their continued friendship and past business dealings with Bill Aires who was proud of bombing government buildings; I am certain you asked for details about the 20 year close relationship with a racist, America hating preacher; I am certain you asked if he, Mr. Obama, feels he can be President and still give his young daughters the time they need from their father; I am certain that you did not demean Sarah Palin by minimizing her experience and leadership as a Mayor and a Governor. I hope my assumptions are correct Meredith, because I would hate to think ALL people in the media are not as fair as they should be.
Take care,
William
I was amazed at your interview with Senator McCain's campaign manager on Friday. How can you in clear conscience act appalled at criticism of the media for being biased toward Obama when it is true? I have heard more about Sarah Palin's daughter than Obama's ties to shady characters such as Tony Rezko and William Ayers. There has been more digging into Sarah Palin's personal life than there has Obama's professional one, which directly influences his ability to govern. The Washington Post and other media outlets have admitted that their coverage of Obama has been slanted toward his favor because he is more "newsworthy", in their words. Yet, you have the nerve to sit there and act indignant over any criticism about the media when your own company employs people like Keith Olbermann and Chris Mathews. Olbermann consistently reports and editorializes against any Republican on his show and is factually flawed in his analysis. His latest stunt apologizing for the RNC's 911 tribute was disgusting. Remember Chris Mathews getting all "tingly" when Obama spoke? Give me a break, Meredith. I thought you had more integrity than that. You need to speak up to the director of NBC news and demand that all candidates be questioned the same and all coverage be equal. Until then, you don't have the right or the credibility to be outraged over criticism. You deserve it.
Shame on you, Meredith. Report the news without putting your spin on it. You are so far left with your political views and behind on womens' rights, it's an embarrassment. Quite frankly, I don't care nor do I want to know your opinions. Keep them off the show and try something different -- try reporting the news. After today's "goofy" show, I will finally switch to something more professional in the morning. I should have done it long ago. Thanks for the final push!
Hello Meredith,
As are many others, I am disappointed in the way NBC is covering the race for president. By they way, hats off to all the others who commented, it is much needed! You need to hear our voices! I am thankful you have this blog, so that we are able to be heard. As many others, I will no longer watch NBC. I am sticking to Fox as I have mainly for quite some time now anyway, but used to watch NBC periodically, but no more! It is so obvious to EVERYONE that NBC, CBS and ABC will never report news without bias when it comes to politics, or any other subject for that matter. FOX is the only fair news station. You asked McCain's campaign manager, why they went on the attack of the media. Are you kidding?? EVERYBODY hates the media and you have now made it worse by the biased coverage on McCain vs Obama, so you are only getting what you deserve! I really can't believe you asked that question. I hope many others will join in start making a serious impact in the media, by not watching any other channel but FOX and or just picking and choosing only the positive reports by viewing news on the internet. This is to avoid all the garbage you try to feed us everyday. We need to stop feeding on it! As far as the personal lives of political figures, I thinks it's none of our business. Do we ask about the personal lives of our banker, or doctor or insurance agent? No! Because we only need to be concerned with the professional services they provide for us. Nobody is perfect and we all sin, and politicians are only human. As long as they take care of our country well, that is our ONLY concern. Who are any of us to judge someone else? God is the only one who can judge us, and the media should really start asking for His forgiveness and start trying to turn over a new leaf.... I think Sarah Palin has won the hearts of every small town resident, parent of a special needs child, sports mom, and anyone else who was on the fence...We all crave to have someone "just like us" in politics, and that is who she is! I would be proud and honored to have someone so honest and humble helping to run our country! Wouldn't you like the public say they are proud of the work the media does? Maybe the media does good acts, but that does not make up for in the least the hurt and pain you cause the other majority of the time.
I was personally very disappointed in your tone when you heard of the news of Sarah Palin being the VP nominee for the Republican party. I enjoy watching your show for the candid interviews and the presenting of news in both serious and playful ways. However, you clearly demonstrated your dislike for Sarah Palin and were often times argumentative with the people you questioned them about her experience, her family, etc... As a professional journalist I expect you to keep your bias and emotion to yourself and present the news as it is so that I may make the choice.
Hello Meredith,
As may others, I am disappointed in the way the NBC is covering the race for the presidency. It is obvious to me and many others that FOX is the only fair news statcion, and can report on politics without bias. NBC, CBS and ABC cannot seems to report on politics or any other subject for that matter without bias! I usually watch FOX only for this reason as do many people I know, but sometimes watch other networks, well no more! It's FOX only from now on. I hope others will join in the avoidance of eating the garbage that is served to us, by selecting only positive reports we can find on the internet.
I can't believe you asked McCain's campaign manager why they were attacking the media...are you kidding? What did you expect? You only got what you deserved! Who is anyone to judge others? We are ALL human and we ALL sin, only God can judge us and we have no business trying to do His job! The media might want to starting seeking His forgiveness and start trying to turn over a new leaf and report the news with Christian morals and standards, that is the foundation of this country after all! I think the personal lives of our country's leaders is no business of ours, unless we see it affecting the way the run our country. We put our lives in the hands of others everyday whom we know nothing about their personal lives...doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, insurance agents. We trust in them that they will do their professional jobs to take care of our needs, and that is the way we should also look at our political leaders! Sarah Palin just won the hearts and votes of every small town citizen, sports mom, working mother, parent of a special needs child...we all crave to have "someone like us" helping run our country. I would be proud and honored to have someone so honest and humble helping to run our country!
I am disappointed in so many of the comments here, blaming the media for exposing the pregnancy of Bristol Palin. Folks, Sarah Palin accepted this position knowing full well that her daughter was going to be dragged through the mud. How dare she! If she was really more concerned about her family than her career, she would have taken herself off the list of possible VP candidates. Don't blame the media for this one - it all began at home.
NBC has lost this household as viewers of "TODAY." We will really miss Matt, Ann, Al and Natalie(although she is on Maternity leave). We stopped one time before and that was when Katie Couric was co-hosting. She was(is) so very obviously Democrat that it made watching her interview the different candidates unbearable. And now you Meredith are doing the same thing!
I worked with the public for over thirty years and I learned from way back that you never let your "party" show. I was raised Democrat and my 83 year old Dad will vote Democrat until the day he dies.
Over the years and as I've grown to know the differences between the parties I am more or less a Republican or maybe even an Independent. But, for people who haven't quite made up their minds the way that you covered the RNC and handled Gov. Sarah Palin's family issue, it showed what "side" you swing towards. Heaven forbid one of your children having a child out of wed-lock. Crap happens in families and the lack of respect that you showed that family was totally appalling! I really admired what Barack Obama said that "peoples families were off limits" KUDOS FOR HIM!!!! I really admired him for that statement.
I may be wrong, but it seems to me that over the years that Democrats and Republicans have swapped their stands on different issues. Like abortion, I mean come on it's murder!!!! And gay marriage, marriage is between a man and a woman! And we wonder why our country is so divided...but for this middle income family from Alabama we're done with "TODAY."

i have watched the today show for many years. i have found myself turning it off lately in disgust. your unabashed & unbiased support for obama is sickening.NBC & affilates have made it clear from day 1 who they support as president.i thought reporters were to be unbiased?
i agree with all the others.your coverage of the elections disgust me. i am a democrat and may vote republican or not at all.
i voted for hilary & hope she runs again in 4 years :O)
Hey Meredith,
Having watched you for years, and having not seen your questioning of Palin, I can't imagine you being anything but non judemental. People just don't seem to get that since the Clinton Impeachment hearings with congress and the horribly personal questions that were asked by the Republican party - that now all questions are on the table for anyone.
I'm scared to death that McCain will keel over and Ms. Palin will become the most powerful human in the world. The investigation of her abuse of power, her stand on creationism, her and McCain's lie that she sold the Alaskan plane on ebay and made a profit, her lie about her non support of the Bridge to Nowhere, her sarcastic rip about community organizers, her cutting the budget for unwed mothers (not all pregnant teens are embraced by their families) and surely her daughters pregnancy should ring a bell that thought abstaining from sex is best-it doesn't always work out...that condoms not ony would have prevented altering these two wonderful children's lives- condoms also SAVE lives by preventing disease..And then there's the preaching in church that the Iraq war is God's will and the Alaskan pipeline is Gods will as well. PLease, every breath Obama and Hillary took was questioned- Palin's must be too, if they ever let her out to answer questions. Many mothers I know are horrified that as a mother she would put her daughter in such a position at this difficult time - she's made her a prop. And her poor son with special needs....
So McCain touts that he's putting country first and not politics...please- there were more capable and experienced VP choices he did not make so that was another lie- he put his political career first with this choice....which puts a whole different light on his judgement and his ability to make decisions.
I love you Meredith and miss you on the View...but I'm glad you aren't on there anymore....you are doing a great job- keep asking the questions people don't want to hear answers to...
Peace,
Deb
Meredith:
I used to like you on the Today show and thought you presented news not as biased as your predecessor. How wrong I am. After your attack on Sarah Palin, my opinion of you, and your ability to be unbiased, has sunk from 10 to 1. Perhaps it's because you want to be accepted by the New York Media, or you are far left liberal that wants to impress America that you care much much more about society than the rest of us. It appears to be more about you. Too bad. I've watched the Today show for over 20 years, but no longer.
Meredith, I was going to complain again about how you and the main-stream media have been unfair to Sarah Palin, but after reading some of the comments, I'm not so sure; I think I just didn't get it, but now I do. After all, Clinton was asked horribly personal questions during the impeachment hearings. Sure, he was only President at the time and impeached for lying under oath not for sex, but still, why all the questions? By asking Clinton so many personal questions means that you absolutely have the right to ask if Sarah Palin gave birth to her baby or is covering up for her daughter. You absolutely have the right to ask Obama if he ever cheated on his wife or if he ever saw a U.F.O with alien occupants looking for food. Everything is fair game now because of those nasty Republicans during the Clinton impeachment, so take that. Ask Sarah Palin why she wears those glasses. Is she just trying to look intelligent and cover-up the fact that she is really stupid? I have seen reputable reports that show she failed her driving test 12 times. Ask John McCain what the real story is with his shoulders. I hear he is just faking it and acting like he can't raise his arms so he can gain sympathy which is reportedly an increase of at least 3 to 4 percentage points in the polls.
People need to hear the answers to these questions, but I fear that they really don't want to hear the truth. You keep doing what you're doing Meredith because more people than you realize can now really see the truth about you and the media. We truly appreciate that.
Be well,
William
the above comments are all true and reflect the views of most people after seeing your interview with Sarah Palin campaign manager--Shame on you Meredith--you have sunk to a new low--just as Katie Couric had done.............but I thought you would be different---obviously, NBC and the upper echelon havenot only allowed you to bring out but fostered an environment that is so anti- McCain and encourage anchors (less we forget Campbell Browne and Keith O) to show their love for Obama that the transparencies are rediculous..........you have a hit a new all time LOW
Where are you you guys going to be when you visit Michigan on Thursday for "Today's Battleground"? What city, location, time? I've never been able to visit your production in NY, and think it would be fun to see you in MI.
HI! I will love to see a segment on solid organ transplant on babies and kids and who are they doing, there is a big need for organd donations and as parents we appreciate any effort in that matter.
Thanks for your time.
