I told you I was going to learn how to fire a machine gun, and I wasn't fibbing. No one has figured out why I did it, so here is a clue: in case you are still investigating, you don't need a tremendous amount of intelligence to figure it out.
While you're pondering, I am already packing for another trip. Next week (my vacation week), my son Ben and I are going to trace our family's roots. We're taking planes, boats and automobiles, so it should be quite an adventure.
After that, Gabe, Richard and I are off to look at colleges (can't believe our middle child is going to be a high school senior). As for Lily, she finally made it to camp after getting a clean bill of health. I think I heard her yell goodbye as she raced out the door.
Is it just me, or is summer flying by just as fast?

Meredith tackles more of your questions! Ask yours today, and check back next Friday for the answer. Maybe she'll choose yours!
Lauren said: Meredith- What are you looking forward to most about the Beijing Olympics? I know you said Ben will be there, but is the rest of your family coming as well? If so, what are they excited to see? Hope you have a great time in Beijing! Can't wait to hear all about it!
I’ve never been to an Olympics so I’m particularly looking forward to the opening ceremonies, and I love gymnastics. Having profiled some of the Chinese gymnasts a year ago when I was in Beijing, I know how incredibly talented those athletes are and can’t wait to see the competitions. As for Ben, he’s covering it for sports so I doubt I’ll get to see him much.
S. Smiley said: hey Meredith... the show has sent you all over the place recently, but if you could go ANYWHERE in the world for a story, where would you go? And if you could go anywhere for FUN, where would you go?
I’m actually going to both places in a week but I can’t tell you where in the world it is—you’ll find out when the segment airs. But here’s a hint: it’s an island, the people are warm and friendly, but it’s been known to erupt…
Joanna De Rosa said: Sometimes I play video games with my kids and I'm surprisingly good at some the Nintendo Wii games (like tennis!) Are you good at video games? I have seen you play on the show before.
I have terrible eye-hand coordination. The last video game that I truly excelled at was Ms. Pacman.
Happy July 4th -- wishing everyone a fun and safe holiday weekend!
Feel free to post a question of your own for next time!

It's 3:15 in the afternoon, and I am waiting for the rundown meeting to end. Every day around this time the producers gather in Executive Producer Jim Bell's office to map out the next morning's broadcast. I already have some idea of what I'll be doing, although we all know news can change on a dime.
As it stands now, I am leaving the show before 8:30 a.m. tomorrow because I have to go learn how to fire a submachine gun. No, I am not kidding, and when you eventually see the piece you'll understand why. Given the fact I have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time, someone very powerful has a lot of faith in me. But, that's enough of a tease.
Stay tuned, as they say. Or better yet, try to figure out what I am up to... besides no good, that is.

Sam said: Does Lily spend all summer at camp or does she also do jobs like babysitting and yard work too? How about your boys...have they ever mowed lawns, painted fences, or worked at Fast Food restaurants to earn their own spending money?
Yes, Lily does part-time babysitting year round. For several summers Ben and Gabe ran an excellent lemonade stand (cookies too) at the end of our driveway, which happened to be across the street from a golf course—you’d be amazed how thirsty those golfers were, and they always left a nice tip.
Melanie said: Meredith, has the air in Beijing gotten any better since you were there last time? I think about what it will be like for the athletes in August.
The air seemed a little better this time than it was a year ago in the city. Supposedly they are shutting down factories and cutting down the number of cars within the city in an effort to cut the pollution.
Kelliann said: Did you sail down the Li River? I lived and taught English in China for seven months in Yangshuo on the Li River. I wrote to my friend, Jonathan, who just opened his own school there, to yell "hello Meredith" if he saw any cameras!
The day I was supposed to be going to the Li River, I received a phone call from New York with the terribly sad news that Tim Russert had passed--we all came home immediately. I hope during my time in China this August I get the chance to experience that trip.

LaDonna and Darnell got married on our plaza this morning. The Atlanta couple exchanged vows before family and friends... and several million viewers. (Relive their race to the altar here).
They were both so poised and sincere I found myself tearing up. Call me a sentimental fool, but I hope I always cry at weddings. It beats going through life a cynic.
Richard and I got hitched 22 years ago--in the backyard of our garden apartment (the "garden" consisted of vases with flowers because it was a brick space). We had a sheet cake and a boom box for music. Any party planner might have laughed at how slapped together it seemed. But it was perfect for us.
I don't think you can help reminiscing about your own big day when you are sharing someone else's. So thank you, LaDonna and Darnell, for a beautiful day, and thanks for the memories.
Here’s to you Mr. And Mrs. Suggs…
